They must have been talking to those guys in the recording industry.

Sadly, they are. With the advent of DVR's, more and more are recording their favorite shows, and watching them at their leisure. As you know, you can fast forward through these commercials, and turn an hour program into a 40 minute show rather easily.

Amazing. Just when I think they could not possibly come up with worse ideas, they go and show me how wrong I was to ever think that!

Ad skipping

while this surprises me..i think the only thing that could be done is to boycott purchasing they're product(s) and /or any other manufacturer who may try to shove this onto the consumer...what does phillps (no capital "p" due to a loss of respect) have to gain but a monetary kickback from advertisers for a job well done?-sorry...answered my own question!

Brilliant Idea!!

Maybe if they get it passed, which is doubtful, they can sell a little black box for a few hundred bucks that cancels the encryption.

Phillips, "Making life a little less enjoyable."

As far as boycotting; Boycot what? Since the '80s these guys haven't put their own label on anything worth buying.

You know, I can't believe that it has much value as a typical residential product, but the potential to find some use for it in a non-residential situation is possible. Perhaps for emergency broadcasts of some sort. Not sure. In the end, it is the consumer that can decide whether to buy or not to buy the products that have that type of technology embedded into it.

Bills passed by congress and the FCC tend to be about copyright and protecting content creators from fraud. Skipping commercials? Well, it just isn't that likely. Especially seeing how half of those guys probably have DVRs at home to begin with.

If I am going to hafta run the commercials, I have a solution. Just let me run the commericals in slow-mo. This way I can use the slow playing commercial as a p---- and get more snacks break, just like the TV programing execs planned the commercials to be used.

There are many patents for products that never get made. Philips is being intelligent in creating a patent so that no one else can do it without paying them. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it, particularly since it cannot affect products already made. You can always refuse to buy anything that uses the technology, should any ever be made and sold (note that they might license its use to other companies without ever putting it in their own products).

Rest assured, however, that if broadcasters cannot get advertisers to pay for programming, you will be made to pay one way or another. It costs a lot of money to broadcast TV, and someone must pay or it will stop. My guess is that they will simply incorporate more ads within the shows themselves ("Mmmm....Coke sure is refreshing after a hard day at work" and other such lines can easily be added to any program). But there are other possibilities as well, such as your cable/satellite monthly payments going way up, along with no free broadcasts. Time will tell what way you will pay for programming.

What would work to fight this if it ever happened is a multi-tier boycot.

Boycot the makers of this tech (let's just say BobCo), and if say, SuperMegaMart sold BobCo, boycott SuperMegaMart, explaining your stance on what BobCo has done, and that you will not cease your boycot until BobCo corrects their actions, or SuperMegaMart stops selling the offending products.

What this does is puts the ball in the reseller's court, and if they have enough data about this, they actually have some clout with the vendor...so things just might get fixed.

I have always purchased Norelco shavers, and I just purchased a Philips DVD player a few months ago. Their products are just as good, if not better, than any of the rest of the mass-market brands.

Actually, I think that's a GREAT idea!... here's why...

The "flags" that trigger the ability for the system to prevent the viewer from changing the channel or blocking out commercials can be easily hacked to allow someone to build a circuit that would turn off the commercials with the use of that flag!

If they want to make something successful in blocking commercials, it can't have any kind of "flag" or "trigger".

With product placement on the new shows they are basically running commercials anyway. Watched Sopranos lately?
But really this is the worst idea I've heard in a while, I'm boycotting anything philips just for bringing it up.

I must be one of the only people in the US that doesn't watch the Sopranos. :)

I guess we can hope that Philips is trying to patent it so nobody else can, and is planning to bury it deeply so it never again sees the light of day?

Nah, they just figure they can make money off of both ends.
