Are audio splitters a bad idea?

I used audio splitters to be able to use just the TV speakers. On my cable box the volume went through the roof when I changed the surround format. It wouldn't turn down until it turned off at -80. On the DVD player when I put a DVD-A in the volume that came out of it was crazy loud. I just hooked the system up again after moving 8 months ago.

I thought I would ask for ideas here before unhooking cables tomorrow.

Saw this mentioned on another forum - check the batteries in the remote because if they are low, sometimes the remote will inadvertently turn the volume up or down with the H/Ks

Funny you should mention that. Just before I realized I had this problem I was adjusting the speaker settings with the spl in the remote. After a couple of tries I realized that the "gains?" were different each time. My S/O suggested fresh batteries. The remote I guess gets you close to 72db at a volume of -15. The rest we did by ear to even them out.

I just checked the batteries with a meter and they show 1.57v each. Brand new. I would like to be told that audio splitters are not inherantly evil. Thanks for the heads up about the batteries. At least I know it's not that. I might have had zone 2 on. The speakers are still in the same room.

The HDTV works just fine on Dolby Digital which is fine for now. I'm gonna give it a rest, give my brain time and let my girl watch all the Regis and Operah she wants on her day off. There is a solution. I just need to let it come.

I figured out how to solve my volume problem and thought I would post the solution. Unhooking the Y adapters did nothing to correct the problem. Resetting the HK AVR 430 as described on pg. 50 of the manual took care of the problem. Not just a simple processor reset but a system reset. Good gravy, what a relief.
