Are ANY AVRs made in the USA?

I was gonna spout off with "Emotiva," but as correctly pointed out already, the XMC's a pre-pro.

While it's a bit depressing, I can also understand the logic from a retailer's perspective. Most consumers who want an all-in-one receiver are going for value, in which case the manufacturers decide to assemble them overseas to keep them competitively priced, whether that be China, Malaysia or otherwise. When a customer is willing to spend more on a setup like a pre-pro, the manufacturers can justify the expense of making them here as they are also priced accordingly, like Macintosh. There is some AWESOME American-made gear, and it's not even too expensive either (again, see Emotiva or Outlaw),BUT it's also not going to be a $150 all-in-one unit either.

Funny thing is how many customers came to me who after putting up with their ultra-low end budget AVR for not even a year would come to our store complaining about said crappy unit, and stepping it up to at least a mid-grade receiver, but then balking at the still very affordable price. Consumers forget how darn cheap we have it these days compared to the 70s/80s when taking inflation into account. $500 these days gets you a helluva lotta bang for the buck. $1000 even more so. Even with a full blown pre-pro plus multi-channnel amp, it's still on par (or less) than what much of Joe Public spent on hi-fi setups back in the day.

Several reasons why CE electronics are not built in the USA..
  • Factory assembly labor cost is 8X higher in the USA than the Orient
  • Factory management labor cost is 12X higher in the USA than the Orient
  • 90% of the key internal components are sourced from the Orient
  • Tooling is less expensive in the Orient by >60% compared to the USA
  • Factory overhead expenses & tax structure are 70% lower in the Orient compared to USA

Bottom line...
A CE brand can build loudspeakers in the USA but to build CE electronics in the USA their costs are simply too high. The average labor cost in China is now $3.50 an hour, compared to $1.05 an hour in Indonesia and $0.95 an hour in Vietnam. Thats why many of the CE factories have left China and moved their production to Vietnam, including the subcontracting assemblers for Marantz, Denon, Anthem, Harman/Kardon. If a CE brand decided to build their products in the USA and made a significant investment for automated, robotic insertion production machines, then certain product costs could be decreased significantly. But will never match the Orient...
The major consumer CE markets of North America, Westeren Europe have spoken...
They have driven hard to get the lowest product pricing.. Most CE buyers today don't fully grasp how good of a deal they are getting..

Just my $0.02... ;)
