I have a 55" Sony HX929 on the way. Can someone tell me about the ARC HDMI input #1 on the set? What is the difference between the other HDMI inputs? I have the Arcam AVR 600, do not think that that is ARC compatible. I wonder if it will be when the new 3D upgrade comes out. Thank you for the help.

The ARC is an audio return channel from TV to a ARC enabled receiver. The only real advantage of this feature is if you are using the internal Tuner on the TV to watch your programming. This eliminates the need for an extra optical cable from the TV to your AVR.

Audio Return Channel (ARC) is something I consider awesome for people who have their receiver located further away from their TV than most.

In situations where you have a game system, or video camera, or any HDMI enabled device you can plug it into the HDMI input right on the side of the TV and the audio will be pulled off and sent to the receiver using the ARC.

Similarly, if you have a Blu-ray player locally to the room, instead of having to run (potentially) a long HDMI cable back to the receiver, you can just run it locally to the display, then let ARC carry the audio back to the receiver for surround sound.

This is (potentially) also nice if you want to use local TV speakers from time to time as you can run all your sources to your TV, then use ARC back to the receiver. You get local audio from your devices right at your TV, but can turn on the receiver and get surround sound that way.

I've had a need recently for this as I have some rooms which are about 100'+ away from the receiver and running HDMI that far is already iffy. So, I can use ARC to handle everything far more easily. Cable box in the basement, Blu-ray player in the room. No audio/video issues.

Are you using HDMI cables, or HDMI extenders?

Another great use of ARC is with sound bars. The Yamaha sound bars paired with Sony TV's, for example, make for an awesome use scenario for the average person. When I install these I hook everything up to the TV and an HDMI from the sound bar to the ARC port on the TV. With HDMI Control enabled the sound bar turns on and off with the TV and the volume control on the TV controls the volume on the sound bar. This eliminates the need for multiple remotes and for many people that don't want to spend big bucks on a universal remote system this is a big plus.
