Apple TV ??? thoughts....

I am looking for some input on the apple tv. Does anyone own one or used to own one?

i don't have an apple tv, but considered getting one.

in the end, i have decided to use a PS3 instead.

apple tv pros:
cheaper than ps3
i don't think the PC needs to be on to play stuff on the apple tv
fancier GUI

ps3 pros:
does the same thing as the apple tv
you can connect an external HD so you can leave the PC off
due to the external HD, has more storage space than the apple tv
bonus BD player

Apple TV

My friend has the apple TV and the GUI is very impressive. It can stream, audio, video, pictures, etc. from your PC and has a built in hard drive. You can download movies (720p w/ DD sound) directly to the device without using a computer. It is a good media center solution for use with your music library in iTunes.

I've seen the AppleTV, but I've put off buying one until it supports more video formats. I think the biggest issue I have with it is that it really seems designed to force you to buy more stuff from the Apple store instead of being able to work the files you already own straight into it.

The GUI on it is really nice, as is typical for Apple.

Yet, the PS3 does a fair bit more, for not a lot more, and offers some impressive upgrade paths which AppleTV does not.

I would use the PS3 instead, but also because I hate apple, and I already have a PS3.

I think its a nice product but seriously worry about reliability and durability. It gets very hot which indicates to me of poor engineering where looks and size are more important than other factors. Maybe its just me but I like buying things that I dont EXPECT to break within 3 years. Especially for that kind of money.
