Apple TV, Denon 4500H to Projector -- no video if Denon on

Bought a house with a theatre setup based on the Denon 4500h

the set top box was removed so I picked up an Apple TV 4k

if the denon was off, the projector would display the apple tv
but if I turned on the Denon, I lost sync with the projector.
would just cycle back and forth trying what looks like syncing but never got a picture.

tried many settings on the Apple TV, different hdmi cables
to no avail

a blue ray player seems to work fine. Swapped cables with it and the blue ray always worked, apple Tv didn’t,

figuring something might be up with the Apple TV, I bought a roku 4K to try that.
exact same behavior.

audio with the xenon on was fine

ive searched online, but have not found my situation.

i’m at a bit of a loss as what to do

Is the Denon in Enhanced Mode? Cables at least Premium Certified 18gbps?

4K Signal Format AVR-X4500H

Found that, it was already on standard, tried enhanced just cause, no change.

I had previously set both the Apple TV and the Roku to run 1080p, and left them that way.

not sure my projector would run 4k

played with some settings -- got it working, then accidentally shut off the receiver -- turned it back on -- nothing I did would work. Very frustrating

Try turning the display (sink) on first, then the avr, then a source?

Sorry, assumed it was a 4K projector. What is the model? Is the Denon’s Video Conversion feature on? i/p scaler on? Shooting in the dark here.
