Anyone tried or uses Magnepan MMGW-MMGC?

Does anyone use this setup for home theatre application, what are your views on them and how do they compare them to the more conventional woofer/tweeter direct radiating speakers?

I am unable to audition them, so any input would be appreciated.

Cheers...

After owning a pair of 1.6's for about 8 months I can surelly say magnepan has a veery unique an open sound for music. In this category they do out perform many direct radiating speaker costing several times as much. However magnepan speakers can be an expensive venture. Even the smallest speakers are very ineffeiceint and require large amounts of power so seperates are a necessity. I personally wouldnt recommend these speakers if you dont have an amp that puts out 250 watts per channel all channels driven full range into a 4 ohm load. These speakers do lack the impact of direct radiating speaker when it comes to HT so dont expect to feel the impact of a movie because its just not there. So if I were you and I had the money to spend to make these work right but intended on watching more movies than music I would go with RBH or Axiom in the end youll be happier. By the way I sold the 1.6's and now have RBH speakers and I love them.

I auditioned a pair of MG 12s at a local dealer with a Bryston amplifier (I can't remember the model, I think either the 3B SST or the 4B SST, one of the physically larger models). They're not the top of the Magnepan line, so this may not apply to those models but likely will to the MMGWs: they don't descend to a particularly low frequency before you can tell they're bottoming out (kind-of). With such a high end amp, I had no complaints about lack of sensitivity; too bad I'd never be able to afford the amp :p. Crossed over well with a sub (as you're sure to do with home theater), that may not be an issue. They had a very interesting "full sounding" effect unlike any speaker I've heard (I auditioned the Paradigm Studio 60s in the same room before them). I must say, I do intend to go back and listen to the MG 12s and some of the higher end models both full-range and crossed over with a sub at some point (I showed up a bit late and only had about an hour to listen); they definately left an impression.

How do the surrounds fair...?

Are they any better than dipoles, how about the sides, would they still have a narrow dispersion?

Cheers...
