Anyone place sub behind listening position?

Hey there,
I just purchased the DefTech SuperCube 2, and am so far really impressed with it's performance from the front of the room. My biggest problem is the only corner placement option is about 18" behind the listening position. Has anyone tried this? I know that they say bas is non-directional, but I would still think that with the sub that close to me it would be way more localized. It may be ok provided the delays are set up properly on my receiver, but before I lug it out there and stretch out more cable I was just looking to get some input on the topic.

Thanks,
Kyle

Different people report mixed results. I didn't care for my sub directly behind my couch in the long run, i got better results overall (at all listening positions) with mine in front. I also have an awkward layout with limited place I can put my subs. Some people say they've had excellent results with the sub right next to the couch.

Start by reading this article :

It should help a little. There are some other great articles in that area too. REmember, not everyones room reacts the same, what works for you in your place may not be optional for others and vice versa.

I have mine in a corner near my couch about a foot behind and I think it is great for action movies and anything where the bass really makes an impact. Its quite impressive when you're sitting there shaking as bombs are going off. Adds to the impact of the movie imop. The only things that have bugged me are that the bass seems as if it comes from behind you instead of coming from the center of the home theater which would be the direction the viewer is looking. Yes bass is technically non-directional but the closer you are to the sub the more bass you will feel as the sound does dissipate over distance. It also gets a little "boomy" at times which I feel is because i'm so close to the unit but it might also be my sub and its settings for certain movies.

Mine is directly to the side of the main listening position. I've calibrated it and I don't feel it is boomy or localizable.

I have both of my subs right behind the sectional in the corners. It gave me a better overall response than any position up front. Friends that I have had over never expect the amount of bass and no one could tell that they were located behind the couch. One guy thought I had them in the closet.

Have you level matched it with the rest of your speakers using a SPL meter? Might be running the sub a bit too hot which is causing the localization and boominess.

I did not care for the subwoofer to the rear because you can tell it's there from the pressure. I have it in front on the main equipment wall and it is working out well. I didn't have to many placement options because of the large size of the subwoofer. I have a BFD for equalization so there is no boom.

In my last place and the current one, the best spot for my sub was always behind the listener position. I determined this bnt crawling around on hands and knees while the sub was located at the listening psoition and found the best bass response in terms of both strength and evenness was behind the listener position. :)

I have 2 subs, one in the front right corner of the room, and one behind and to the left of the couch. I like it. Every once in a while, the sub behind the couch is a little localizable, but not very often.

I have yet to do that and that is probably why I'm getting the boominess. I'll have to run out and grab a SPL meter this week and get that all fixed. Thanks for the advice.

My sub is placed behind my listening position and I noticed quite a bit of localization, but adjusting the phase control and careful use of the SPL meter and level control has helped alot.

The trouble I had with mine was it sounded great sitting on the right side of the couch and not at all great on the left. I only had about a foot of room to move it side to side. That and I could feel it pounding the back of the couch, which I really liked at first, but over time it started irritating me.

Now I have both in the front corners, one right, one left. Still not perfect, but much improved overall. The sound and sensations, shaking floor and couch, are not localizeable at all.

Just work with what you got til you find the best overall spot for your place.
