Hi everyone. First-timer here, hope I can get some help and learning. I'm trying to buy a used shelf stereo system (dual-cassette deck + CD player + aux line-in), only reason being that my mom still likes cassettes and likes recording to them :D Anyway, she had two boombox-style machines, and they both failed (cassette player failed, just distortion now, and CD cannot read anymore). Didn't look at it yet, maybe the cassette head wore down? I don't think she took proper care of it, plus I'm not sure how. Not sure why CD player stopped working though. Had a third machine, a 10-yr old shelf stereo, one of the belts for one of the tape decks broke, so it's sitting around, plus the CD stopped reading. Anyway, I went around Fry's, but they sorta stopped selling these things, so I'm looking for used. Is this a good idea? The only brand I know now is Aiwa. Looking for used on Craigslist I ended up with NSX-D7 for $70, CX Naj20, NSX-DS50, and CX-NHMA56 for $100 each. I might go for either NSX-D7 or CX-NAJ20 b/c I don't need all those extra speakers.

What do you guys think? I don't know how the Aiwa line of speakers work, or their naming convention. I'm just looking at what I need in there. Is going used an okay idea? I feel it'll just break down again, and I'll have to figure out what to do. My alternative idea was to get a dedicated dual cassette deck from eBay (one of those things you plug into a receiver) and let her make her "mix" tapes here, then find a boombox-style machine that has either cassette or a line-in, maybe connect a tape playetr to it, and then figure out where to go from there. But I'm not sure how well these dual cassette decks work, like a Sony TC-WE435.

Thanks for any input!
- Eli

In my experience Aiwa systems are notorious for failing CD players transport - my 2c - stay away - get Panasonic/Technics or atleast Kenwood.
