Anyone else have NBC weirdness on DISH?

Wasn't sure what else to label this. I have DISH, we will be watching tv {I think it maybe limited to NBC?}, oh, our "locals" {Charleston WVA} are not HD over the Dish, a lot of times there is text/logos running off the screen. We do watch it "stretched", but it doesn't seem to matter, I have tried different settings on the TV and the SAT settings. And one other thing, your watching a show, then all of a sudden it goes to letterbox and there is a very noticeable sound change, generally louder. Then a minute or two it goes back to the previous format. Just wondering whats up.

I haven't really noticed, but I'll check it out. I'm also using the off-air receiver to pick up some of my local channels along with the HD local broadcast from Dish.

I'm not quite sure about the first problem you'd described, but the second one I've quoted above is usually when the local channel switches from an HD feed to an SD feed in where the image size is changed as you noted and the audio will change from 5.1 or another digital signal to a 2.0 analog signal, which causes the audio to jump about 5-7 dB in volume. I've seen this when one of our locals layers a scrolling message (e.g. analog to digital transition message, accident during rush hour or breaking news of substantial interest, etc.) on top of the show being broadcast.

Apparently they can't add this information in an HD feed layered over the existing show b/c I've never seen them do it w/out causing the issues you described. Maybe it's possible and they just haven't felt it necessary, but it is a P.I.T.A.

Can you describe your initial problem in a bit more detail? -TD

p.s. You'll see I'm using the same Dish receiver

I've got Dish but I use an off-the-air antenna for locals. I watch NBC news sometimes and the HDTV image is very good without any flaw that I have noticed. So I would guess the problem is not in the network feed (or source) at least.

Probably unrelated, but I always seem to have an audio lag with NBC over the air, the audio is behind the video, not the other way around so the audio sync feature doesn't work. All the other stations are fine.

I did have a station that changed screen size on me for no apparent reason last week, I think went SD then back to HD, but I cannot remember which channel, either would have been NBC or FOX.

Pick up NBC-HD via over the air signal and frankly it's my favorite HD feed of the four networks.

BTW...DTS, Where do you live in Southeast OH that Charleston is your local network? Just curious, as I live in Teays Valley, WV (Southwest WV) :p

I live in Athens Co. We can't get decent over the air reception down in our "holler".

This brings up a question for me....

I was going to get an antenna for my local HD channels, but what happens when everything is switched over to digital, does that mean that Dish will be giving me my locals in HD or that same stuff that is cropped back to sd?

Dish will transmit whatever your locals will broadcast OTA, meaning they could broadcast SD or HD via digital, I don't think their feed of your locals will be any different.

I currently have an OTA antenna connected to my Dish 622 HD receiver andhave the locals package from Dish, I don't see much image quality difference between the two. It makes it a bit more convenient to DVR from locals via OTA while watching locals via Dish and vice-versa if there are time conflicts... -TD

I had a similar issue occurring only with NBC on their HD broadcast, provided by the local cable company. Switching back and forth between SD and HD feeds - sometimes at a rate of once every 3-4 minutes. Got to the point where it was unbearable to even watch anymore... only happened once though, last Thursday. NBC from my local provider usually has some of the better HD programming, I was simply left scratching my head that night...

Can you upgrade to a 722 ?

Just a thought, will DishNetwork let you upgrade from a 622 to 722? ... I mean at No Cost  I actually have both and put the 722 with my main system. It seems to have improved the PQ and operation, but I have no measurable metrics and it may have been just because I thought the 722 should be better.

I'm pretty sure they'll nail you with an upgrade fee and/or possible contract extension (2 yr.).

According to Dish, the only difference between the 622 and 722 should be the larger hard drive for DVR recording, but I haven't seen any specs comparing the two, so there could be additional differences... -TD

That is what I did, I upgraded from three receivers down to 2 of the 722's, there was a charge, I doubt they will let you skate on the price...

The 722's to me are exactly the same, no different then the 622's.
