Hi,
I am doing my research on building an entry level home theatre. I just got a yamaha HTR 5760 and need some suggestions for speakers. I listen to pop, classic and jazz, sometimes I listen to some rock. Any suggestions? for example, which brand is the best match for the receiver? If my budget is $500-$800 for the main speakers, on which ones should I keep an eye? Thanks.

Paradigm Monitor7.(floorstanding)
Paradigm Studio20.(bookshelf)
B&W 705's.(Bookshelf)

All around $800. B&W is top pick out of these three for my ear.
CORRECTION! That is an each price for the B&W. My bad!

I assume by "main" you mean the front right and left. $800 for the pair gets you into many, many, many options. I have Energy C-9's with my Yammi 2500 and love them, you might not. The first thing everyone is going to tell you is to get out there and audition as many as you can. Best to bring them home and listen and then return if you are not happy. Just be sure you know if you can do that up front. Once you find something you like you may find you can save a little buying on line, but beware. The shipping can eat up what you saved versus picking them up from a local dealer.

Start with Polk, Athena, PSB, Energy, Mirage, Infinity. On line, visit Axiom if for nothing else than the great information you can use to help you research.

You'll do well with your budget, have fun! :D

I don't know if the Monitor 7 is going to give you the bass response you need for the music you listen to unless you are using a dedicated sub. The Monitor 11 would be a better choice, but then you are talking about foregoing the cash needed for the sub to buy the two fronts. You said entry level and Paradigm is not IMO entry level. I agree with WooHoo with the Athena recommendation. Excellent reviews, and you can get into two towers with better bass for your music. Our VP has a 5.1 setup of Athena and they blew me away when I heard them. The are Energy's sister company. Here's my vote:

Here's my vote for a less expensive set of towers:

BIC makes one of the best center channels made for under $150. Check out the website or read the reviews. Amazing little company.

Athena is a great product. But, blue_3too stated he/she was building a HT. To me, that means a sub will be used. Then, blue_3too stated he/she had a budget of $500-$800 for mains. Please be sure to mention that Athena, although a great budget speaker, can't compete with Paradigm & B&W. :)

I have cerwin vegas (v series). I say get 4 cerwin vegas e series, v series, or classic series with 15" woofers(3-way) for front and rear and put them on stands off the floor to reduce echo, get the matching centre and 4 matching bookshelf spkrs for rear and prescence, then never turn it past -20db because that might harm the unit and youve got one awesomely thunderous mighty system!!!!! Okay, you can get 12" or 10" woofers, but you have to promise me you'll get 4 subwoofers then...just joking. Hope you find what your looking for.

Sorry to thread jack, but Zumbo, I'm dying to know where you can pick up a pair of 705's for 800. The MSRP is 750 for 1!

To blue_3too, I would take a look at the B&W 603's I know those can be had in your price range. They have a decent reponse so you should be happy with them until you can get a dedicated sub. Thier lower frequency roll of is pretty smooth, so they sound impressive on thier own, IMO.

Best value and sound

I agree with buckeye fan. I have the DV62 clr BIC cenrer chan. I love it. It has some of the best reviews. You can get it for around $100, online. I would use 3 of those- L,R & C, then look at their smaller ones for the rear. You will be amazed at how good that little speaker sounds.

Oops. I stand corrected. That is an each price. You can see why I would choose the B&W over the others. I do love them.

So, I will have to stick with the Paradigm recommendation.
