Any opinions on these screens?

Do they have anything other than matte white? Not really the best for DLP.

Matte white?.....please expand. (The projector I'll be using is an LCD in a 13' x 19' HT room).

If you can possibly afford it go with a fixed screen. The Carada Criterion Screens sound like an awsome screen and is what I am going to replace my pull-down with. You can find a review for them on the home page of this site. If you get a pull down, and are any kind of serious about home theater, you will later wish you bought a fixed screen. You may have a reason to use a pull-down, such as hiding it in a living room or something. If it is for a dedicated HT room go with fixed. I made this mistake myself and am going to have to replace my pull-down soon. Pull-downs always seem to have wrinkles and take away from your viewing pleasure.

100% agree with Doug, and my follow up is that if you must use a roll-up screen, then splurge for the tab-tensioned models... Wish there was a manual one though.

There really is nothing wrong with matte white for LCD/DLP, but more effective contrast ratios can be achieved with the grey screens, though some don't like them. I like them a lot.

What is our model of projector that you own?

Is the room a dedicated theater so a fixed screen is an option?

What are you looking to spend on a screen?

I've been using a manaul POS pull down screen for a couple of years and there are definitely wrinkles in it, and every other manual screen that I have seen. I'm longing for a tab-tensioned screen, but that may still be well out of my budget.

If really cheap is what you want, definitely check eBay for some deals as well. When I'm done with my 16:9 screen, that's where it is going and it is truly flawless... the wrinkles were there the day I got it and are there now.

If you by a screen with wrinkles make them warranty it. Da-Lite will replace it with a new one immediately.

Earful,
Gray is the recommended screen for DLP and Moderate output LCD. It helps increase the Black levels.

A matte white screen is alright if you have total light control in your room.
(really dark).

Hmmmm. It will be a dedicated HT room, and I've just finished painting the walls a dark dark burgundy sort of color and a taupe color for the ceiling.
It's really dark in there and all 6 wall sconce lights are paired on dimmers from front to back so that only the rear two can be on nice and low like during play.
The projector will likely be a Panasonic AE700.

Thanks for the pointers on going with a fixed screen.

Sorry - more specifically, there are waves in non-tensioned screens. I have yet to see a non-tensioned screen from any company - including DaLite - that does not have slight waves from side to side.

It isn't dramatic, but they are there and are always there. Wrinkles imply that the fabric was pinched, which is not the case. The waves are just due to gravity pulling at the screen and only is dealt with through tab-tensioning.

I would love to go with a fixed screen if I could - but I can't. I'll have to splurge for the tab-tensioned motorized.
