Any mechanics in the house? Have a part question

Transmission is ZF 6hp26 and is there a replaceable Neutral Safety switch? Seems right now the only option is to scrap the entire transmission and that's not cost effective relative to the value of the vehicle.

They make an out of band starter actuator so that may solve my problems when the car doesn't want to start.

It's a long shot, but maybe worth a try - reach out to Wes From YT's "Watch Wes Work."
He did several transmission repairs on his channel.

Did you try to start it in neutral ?? That usually works.
A lot of times the actual switch isn't bad, but the linkage that moves it can easily get gunked up....
I see thats a Beemer now...God Help and Protect You. :)

I've tried the neutral start and it's not that. Also it's not a beamer. A lot of manu's use ZF transmissions.

I'm going to use a bypass starter. The issue is I don't drive but 2-3K miles a year and if I can keep going with a $20 bypass....

I know the feeling...I drive far less than that now.
My 88 Saab 900 Classic Turbo (sold it recently) had the safety switch right on the gearshift itself...not out in the engine bay. I thought it was acting up...it was a big copper contact plate.

I ended up just taking it out...(I know after 50 years of driving not to turn the key in Drive !!)

Seriously, I have no life.
When I was in college, they taught us about 'SIB-KISS'- that seems to have been lost in the past.

That is not advisable and can result in serious accidents. I bet it is also illegal.

It's just for when it doesn't want engage.

To be frank it's an issue if you purposefully put the car in gear and then start it.

Update: I did wire a bypass starter and am so glad that I did. When the vehicle wouldn't turn over with the key it also wouldn't turn over with the bypass.

I found an OEM supplier and had a starter that came direct from Korea. It was a two bolt install and that was done today. Keeping fingers crossed but I think this was the culprit but difficult to t-shoot due to the intermittent nature of the problem.

Probably a bad brush or commutator in the starter motor.

I have not had much luck with Asian starter motors or alternators over the years. I would have the original starter rebuilt by a good shop as insurance.

Good idea but the replacement was $160 shipped. So unless a rebuild is appreciably less I don't think I can responsibly fund rebuilding of a starter with 89K miles on it.
