It's good enough for a college student. You'll need a book and to keystone to get the throw you want probably. You may need a new lamp. Always keep a spare IMO. If you have no issues troubleshooting it or opening it you can probably get a good deal used.

Are you able to do almost complete light control?

How much do you intend to run the PJ? Keep in mind that lamps last only about 2500-3000hrs. Meaning you will need a new lamp every other year or sooner (assuming 4hrs per day average use).

I'm going to ask it flat out...

Did you buy this, or are you asking for information about it?

IMO, this is not at all what you want. This is a business class projector which is designed for PowerPoint presentations, not proper home theater. It's native resolution is a long way from 720p or 1080p. It is NOT an HD projector and never will be.

If you are looking for a budget projector for school, then why not get something like this:

I would also pretty much demand that you get a LAMP WARRANTY. They give you two new lamps (or similar) if the lamps in the projector burn out over the next 2-3 years, depending on where the warranty comes from.

Ceiling mount it, no lens shift, but minimal offset should make it unneccesary. It'll give you a solid 1080p image on a DIY screen if you want, or get a nicely painted white wall or a manual pull down screen.
