I went out on a limb and built my own speakers over the summer. See http://www.carstereo.com and check out loudspeakers 101 to get most of the calculators you need. Go to the DIY forum here for more assistance. Don't be afraid to ask questions! It's better to find out now than screw up later.

Check out "The Loudspeaker Design Cookbook", by Vance Dickason. VERY informative. A must for any DIY'er.
