I am looking through ebay to see what's out there in the used HT spkr. realm. I have noticed few brands that I have not heard of (note: reading this and other sites has opened my eyes to many great manufacturers that I was not ware of). Your thoughts on: Vortex, Theater research, Digital Research, ACOUSTECH.

I hear many folks say that Bose is not all is cracked up to be....thoughts? I saw this package and was interested: BOSE 401 (4)SPEAKERS AND BOSE CENTER SPEAKER VCS-10. Since it's an auction, price is unknown. $100 is current bid but the reserve has not been met.

Thoughts on JBL Northridge series or Yamaha brands (in general)?

My thought is that I can get more by buying used and my entire budget is $500 shipped (including sub). Any suggestions for HT packages (with or without sub)? If your suggestion is w/o a sub, can you suggest a sub?

Lastly: is it important to buy a HT spkr package with sub included?

Info: 11x20x9 room, Pioneer KSX-815, PIONEER DV-588A-S DVD Player, flexible on floor v. bookshelf. Current speakers: Yahama sub (120w, 8 inch), two 3-way older Yamaha bookshelf spkrs, two BA CR6 surr. spkrs. Primary use will be movies, music sometimes.

Let the advising begin! :)

Thanks!!!

Out of the brands you mentioned, Acoustech is the only decent speaker. The other ones (most notably Theater Research) are known as "White Van" speakers. They look cool, but are actually made with garbage components and marked up like 1000%. Stay away from those.

Acoustech on the other hand is made by BIC, a company that has been making quality speakers for 25 years.

Regarding Bose, you are indeed correct. They have an amazing marketing department. Unfortunately they spend way more on marketing than product engineering. Their products are very overpriced relative to the performance they offer. Their drivers are cheap, their enclosures thin and generally not well braced. You can get a lot more performance from a non-Bose system for the same amount of money.

The JBL northridge series is not too impressive, IMHO. JBL has made a lot of good stuff over the years, and in their professional lines, they still have a lot of great offerings. Unfortunately, their lower end consumer lines just don't offer as much performance and sound quality as other brands for the same price. Yamaha is a good option, and since you already have some Yamahas, you might want to check out their offerings. That is, assuming you like the sound.

When buying a HT package, it isn't necessary to get one with a sub, but many times you can save money. In your budget catagory, you'd probably do best to find a package that includes a subwoofer. Of all the brands you mentioned, I would say an Acoustech system would be your best bet. You have a good sized room, so you're going to need some speakers that can fill it up. The Acoustechs are very efficient, so they won't stress your receiver as much when you crank it up. The Acoustech sub is also a good unit. Not as powerful as more expensive offerings, but for the price, you'd be hard pressed to beat it.

How about this Bic America package? It's $529, and probably another $29 shipping (you have to check for your location). So for about $60 above what you said you get what many consider to be one of the best center speakers for the money, 4 timber matched bookshelf speakers, and their 12" subwoofer that isn't too shabby.

Something didnt smell right with the Theater Research (price too low).

If I can push my luck with a followup question...what are your thoughts on:

Klipsch Quintet II Home Theater System (I'd have to buy sub or use my yamaha). $299 shipped

Athena Point 5 MK II (I'd have to buy sub or use my yamaha). $250 shipped

Athena MICRA-6SYS includes sub ($370 shipped)

Fluance Main and Rear Surrounds speakers from AV_HTB set+ Cadence XC-9 Center channel (I'd have to buy sub or use my yamaha). $213 shipped

FYI on the Acoustech -- from ebay = Individual pricing for the Acoustech speaker series is as follows: HT-75 main channel towers ($499.00/pair), HT-65 center channel speaker ($179.95), HT-63 rear channel/bookshelf speakers ($269.95.00/pair), and H100 subwoofer ($349.00). Package pricing for the entire six-speaker system is $1,199.00.br>

How much would you pay for these Acoustechs?

I will also look into the BICs.

Many thanks for your advice!!!!

Chris

Actually the Fluance you are looking at are mine.
And they do sound great, if you want pm me. I may be able to make a little better offer on the center. The original center that came with the set, did sound a tad congested. And the XC-9 helped this out tremedously.

That's a high price. You can get the entire Acoustech system from Ubid for a little over $900 shipped. Here's a link. The BIC system (Venturi line) would be less expensive. You might want to consider going with the DV84 floorstanders up front and the bookshelves in the rear. That should still put you in under the Acoustech price, but still over your $500 budget.

Athena is also a good option. However, I'd try to spend the most you can on your budget. Obviously you shouldn't overspend and make yourself poor, but set a limit, and try to get the most you can for that amount of dollars.

You can do way better on that package. Go to Ubid via this link for an example. I hate that Klipsch setup. It is one of the few Klipsch setups I have ever heard and to me they seem like computer speakers more than HT speakers.

On the Athena .5 system I give big thumbs up. Pick up a cadence Xsub again from Ubid for $219 shipped or direct from cadence by going to cadencesound.com. I believe they charge $229 including shipping. Did you see that .5 setup at Onecall.com ? If not then you should know that they are an authorized dealer and the price is lower than you quoted. About $230 shipping included and brand new.

That Bic setup posted by shadowferret will give you what IMO is the best setup, but I really like that .5 setup as well.

Edit Darn Yous Jaxvon. Ya beat me to the punch. :p

I just gave him a offer on the Fluance set, at 195.00 shipped. Which would leave him plenty for a sub.

I agree that it's over his price range, Usually I wouldn't have posted the info at all, except in response to his question and to let him know the package was available for well under $1200 plus shipping. I'm not telling the guy to go out and spend $900 if his budget is $500, I just don't want him to consider $1200 when he doesn't have to either. I'm an options man ;)

clarification on Acoustech package

Great advice....thanks!

To clarify: the pricing listed for the Acoustech speakers was what the seller listed as the MSRP pricing. The auction price is currently at $152 with three days left.

The speaker package (used) includes:
two HT-75 main channel towers
HT-65 center channel speaker
two HT-63 rear channel/bookshelf speakers
H100 subwoofer

What would be your max price you would bid for these on ebay?

This forum is awesome!!

If I had a chance to audition the speakers and I liked them then the Ubid price of $800 is very fair IMO. $800 on a whole HT including floorstanders and a halfway decent starter sub is fan frigging tastic. Speakers are the one thing I won't buy without an audition though, but supposedly some Costcos have these speakers available for demo so you might want to check them out. Alternatively the Acoustech use Horn drivers so listening to a decent set of Klipsch speakers at your local Best Buy might give you some Idea as well. Horn speakers are not everyones cup of tea and you should be really careful about where you put such speakers. Hard and reflective surfaces like concrete or hardwood can kill the sound quality of these speakers pretty easily. I'd blow your whole $500 on that setup and not bat an eyelash if you like the sound though. But, and this is the but you don't want to hear, Brian is bang on when he quoted about $120 shipping. It's a lot of boxes and most aren't light. Also there are sellers on ebay that jack the price up for shipping to insane levels, watch out for that. I don't think that the Acoustech will stay in your price range once you factor in shipping. It's always some lucky guy that lives a block away that puts the high bid in because he doesn't have to worry about the shipping. For him to bid $500 is like you having to pay $620.

Actually I have it on my watch list. And I would even put in a bid of about 425.00 and the guy states 80.00 for shipping. But I would only do that at the last minute. But as Takeereasy said it will get a bid of at least 500.00 plus the shipping. And may even reach a 550.00 - 600.00 bid. They are great, but they do have a particular sound.

acoustech speakers...

I have the acoustech mains ( left, center, right ) and i'm happy enough with them to finish out the rest of my system with acoustech rears and sub. I should have researched it prior to saying this, but i am under the impression that both amazon and overstock.com's will ship free of charge, and i do believe at one point in time or another they offered the acoustech line. I would definately check with those two just for the hell of it.

The price for shipping at Ubid was not a quote, they state right on the site that shipping is $129 for the whole system.
