any benefit using 16 instead of 18 guage??

Gauge of the wire used for speaker level connection depends on distance. Longer the distance, lower the AWG (physically thicker wire). IMO, just use 10 to 12 gaure wire for all speaker connections irrespective of distance and you will be fine.

I agree about using 10-12Awg speaker cable, 14 at the most.

10 is usually too big to fit in most binding posts and many connectors, and generally is overkill. 12 will work for pretty much everything most people will ever install, and 14 would be the minimum I would use for anything over 40ft. 18 will almost certainly not cut it, period.
