It depends on the spl you need at you seating positions and the specifications of your speakers. Under some conditions, even 4 ohm speakers may not be an issue, but under other conditions, it will not even be able to work with 8 ohm speakers (I say this just to emphasizing the point that more info is need).

Peak SPL Calculator (hometheaterengineering.com)
Crown Audio - Professional Power Amplifiers

Those calculators are based on 8 ohms, for 4 ohms, double the calculated "watts" for the same spl.

The 1140 has lesser amps for other than the main five channels, too, but don't see that the impedance rating varies (nor 4 ohm rated particularly). But as was said more information about spl level, distance from speakers, particular speakers, etc....so, maybe?

I have 6 JBL SCL-8 – 4ohm speakers in the ceiling. 2 for rear surround and 4 Atmos. The FCR are 6 ohm JBL’s SCL-6 2.5 with one sub.

Does having the rear surrounds in ceiling mess with ATMOS tracks at all?

I wouldn't use 4ohm speakers on the 1140 height amps. Definitely get some external amplification from Monoprice or Anthem if you can swing it.

Trust the spl calculators! It really depends. People say the KEF LS50s are hard to drive, and they are in my living room, but when I use them for my desktop system, they sounded great with my little 50 W integrated amp, and I know I could get by with a 5 to 10 W amp. So again, it really depends. Of course if you hook up a 500 W amp then you know it will be good regardless, but in such approach, no questions need to be ask, just go with the maximum recommended power, and double it!
