Projector ANSI lumens.....

How many ANSI lumens (minimum) do I need for a projector on an 84" screen, viewing at about 15-20 feet, to get a good picture? I'm trying to find a nice HT front projector and I just want to make sure I get the most bang for my buck. Is there is another feature that I should be concerned with that is more important? I know that contrast ratio is important also... Thanks for your help...

That's about a 21 square foot screen if we are talking 84" diagonal 16:9 which means that about 320 to 370 lumens will fire up a 1.0 gain screen without any issues at all.

I personally believe that if 15' is your closest viewing point that if you are getting a HD projector, then your screen size is well under what it should be and I would be thinking about a 120" diagonal screen at about the smallest.

What is important with projectors?
Brightness vs. screen size (the two are dependent on each other) Since almost any projector will blast an 84" screen it is almost a non-issue for you.
Contrast ratio (unless you have ambient light in the room)
Color accuracy
Image uniformity
Resolution
Image processing (very important!)
projector noise
projector setup capabilities (zoom/lens shift)
Inputs/outputs fit your needs

A ton of little things matter, but those are just off the top of my head and I'm sure I'm forgetting a bunch.

I made a mistake. The screen is 96"x72".

That is a 1.33, 4x3 screen:eek: A TV. Movies, most are at least 1.77 format, and up.

Also, the lumens are after proper ISF calibration. Published lumens are not very useful as it is taken at unrealistic white temperatures at over-driven conditions to impress people.
Also, foot-Lambert on screen is what is used in theaters, not lumens.

Uh oh. Am I correct in saying this screen will suck for any projector I get? This screen is already in place, so I wasn't really going to change it, but I guess the pros out weigh the cons? I'm really considering the Panny
PT-ax100u. Would this screen even be worth a crap with this projector?
