Another Sub Dilemma

First of all, thank you all for the great information on these forums (this is my first post). I have been engrossed for days, and the information is awesome.

I am in the process of picking out a sub for my living room. The room is 18'x13' with a 10' cathedral ceiling. I was initially thinking a def tech supercube 3, but after reading through the forums and elsewhere it looks like there might be some better options out there. I am trying to stay below $650 (but if there is a must have for another $100 or so I could probably ante up). I was hoping you could offer some input/advice on the following (or other options if I missed anything good).

Hsu vtf3 mk3 ($799 delivered) - is it worth the extra money over the SVS pb12-nsd or the Hsu vtf2 mk3?

Hsu vtf2 mk3 ($608 delivered)

SVS PB12 NSD ($624 delivered)

Epik Vanquish ($759 delivered) - don't know much about this one, but have heard a couple promising rumors.

I am running a Yamaha rx-v1900 with def tech bpx surrounds and CLR2300 center. I am shopping fronts at the moment to replace my old Bose 901s (I know, I know, they were cheap and I was young). I use it about 80% movies, 10% games adn 10% music.

For your room size the SVS PB12 NSD will be more than sufficient. You should have it in 2 days from the time it ships.

Thanks for the thoughts. I have been eyeing the BP 10s, but haven't gotten too far in the research yet. I have to decide if I can get anything for the 901s or if I should just relegate them to basement duty.

Hello there, thought I would chime in. I have owned the PB10-NSD, PB12-NSD, and the VTF-3 MKIII. Of these, the 3.3 was my favorite. However, the PB12-NSD has been improved since then. As such, given your price limits I would opt for the PB12-NSD. SVS's customer service is second to NONE I assure you that. To be honest, you could NOT go wrong either way. My votes for the SVS PB12nsd just because I owned one and it was a strong performer, Also like stated above there customer service is second to none and doesnt stop after the sale. Your treated with thoughtfulness and care as if you were just getting ready to buy and not one that has already. Some brands you cant even get a hold of anyone for days even before the sale so I cant imagine what it would be like after. I know when I did my research one of your choices I was never able to make phone contact with after many many attempts during there business hours although I did get emails a few days later. To me customer service is a very important part . I dont like the idea of buying something and having questions before a sale and have to wait to get a responce 2 or 3 days later by email for questions or concerns . SVS WILL ALWAYS TREAT YOU WRIGHT FROM MY EXPERIENCE : )

Thanks all for the input. I am heading out this week to listen to everything I can find. My deal for the def techs fell through, so I am now looking for a complete system minus receiver. I still really like the def techs, so I may try to find another deal on them.

As far as subs, do you think it is worth waiting and buying the PB13 ultra in a couple months or is it overkill for my smallish room?

Also, any thoughts on eD subs? I have only heard them in cars, but people seem to be pretty impressed with them.

If you can't tell I have a hard time buying danything I can't touch, see and listen to, so the ID subs make me a little nervous. Thanks again.

YMMV, and overkill is one of the hardest things to define, IMO. The ONLY worry about the PB13, for me, is if the size is too large aesthetically. If this is a concern, I would do some sort of cardboard mockup to really see. It's VERY difficult to picture the differing sizes, mentally. All subs seem to look like the size sometimes on a computer screen. Otherwise, it's a real value leader for the price point.

The only other consideration I can think of is taking a tad bit away from the sub budget, say for the value oriented PB12, and applying the savings towards bass traps for smoother in room response.

Not very pretty; value oriented. Some people, even owners, say it's like the finish on a truck bed liner.

I absolutely understand. When I first started on this madness, I met and spoke with double digit dealers. I have no problem with the concept of ID, and in fact often recommend certain ID brands. Often this includes Ascend for speakers and SVS for subs.

I believe Rythmik has a model at $669. Another sub worth considering.
