due to being cheap, well not to mention broke.. id like some help picking out which sub to buy for my home theatre im building in the basement.. but you have to pick from the following list, only because these subs are fairly cheap on ebay and after the building expenses not to mention the stupid over priced in wall speakers( still undecided on the brand/model) i dont have alot left to spend on a sub..

Klipsch KSW-12
JBL S120PII
BIC America V1250 (never heard of this one)
Infinity PS-12
Cerwin Vega CLSC-12S
Athena 12" P6000
Velodyne VPR-1200
JBL E250

if you have any knowledge on a good set of in wall speakers, id also like to hear which is a good model/brand

thanks in advance, james

So, what kind of budget are you looking at for speakers and subwoofer? Total...

The anthena is probly your best bet. I have heard it extensively, and its very impressive. The JBL's would be alright, but nothing there will touch the Athena.

I wouldn't say that sheep. THe BIC does ok. I would go with the Acoustech H100, this is a very good sub for the money. Also look into the Cadence XSUB, yet another good value. I think both of these are a little bit better than the Athena. As far as the others on the list, I would probably stay away from them.

actually, there is no 1250, theres a 1220, but thats it. If its an older model, I wouldn't even bother. The P6000 is brand new, and beautiful. All the bic stuff looks cheap, the blackash everywhere look doesn't do it for me.

The athena uses a BASH amp, and has a downfiring aswell as front firing port. Its a sweet subwoofer, and its almost impossible to get it to chuffle, you have to abuse it.

this page has some indepth stuff on the subwoofer

In wall speakers....sweet.

Niles Audio pretty much has the market cornered for in-wall type stuff. Here are my recomendations.

Niles, Phase Tech, ADS, and for in wall subs...Earthquake THore System. Phase Tech has a nice In wall sub as well. But Earthquake has the heat I hear for in wall subs.

I have to agree with the other poster, the Athena is a good choice between the models you have listed. I also agree and I know everyone loves Bic on these boards, but they look cheap to me. Heck they can't even play a decent web designer to do their site. Doe's anyone else think this besides me? The site looked like the homepage of "speaker out of the white van company!" I will say they I have never heard Bic's in action and so my opinion is based off of the look of the speakers and what I have heard on audioholics.

speakers

i was looking at the polk lc65i inwall speakers for the front and back, center would use their lc265i, all can be had for about 1200 doing some shopping around, ive heard them at best buy and they sound pretty decent.

the klipsch r-5650w's look nice, but i havent heard them.. i cant seem to find a good deal on the niles, i did hear them at an "expensive" audio store along with some boston acustics which were REALLY nice, however 800 bucks a peice.. little to pricey for me.

guess ill get the athena... its a good deal and i dont have the cash for a super nice sub, maybe down the road...

my denon 3805 just got here today.. its nice...

thanks for your help guys... and ill wait another day before buying just to read any other comments..

Be careful, while nice the Polk LC series is 4 ohm. You might look at the TC series instead or my favorites, Definitive Technology.

If you can find an Athena P6000 for $250, get it.
BIC makes some nice Muro inwall speakers with directional tweeters. Directional tweeters are a must with in walls due to placement constraints.

Yes, the BIC website blows, but I have to disagree on the looks of their speakers. The 62 series center and bookshelves are much more attractive looking than my Polk RT/CS series which run 5x as much. Black is much easier to blend in a room than a stained veneer color.

If you're lucky enough to be able to match a stained veneer speaker to the rest of your decor, then by all means go that route. You can't beat those AV123 Rocket towers in South American Rosewood. Beeeutiful. ;)

Buing cheap often is a dissapointment every time you listen to it or i should have waited or i wish. I would wait, save and then get a nice mid-priced sub. TMO;)

Athena AS-P4000 vs. AS-P6000

I was just reading the Athena web site to check out these two subs I hadn't considered before. It was the first site where I saw a room size suggested...they suggest the 4000 up to 400 ft, the 6000 over 400 ft.

My room is is only 195' but right next to the where the sub will be replaced is an adjacent room just as small...most of the sound will probably be reflected off a wall and won't go that way. I haven't seen a room size recommendation before. Does that mean the other subs I am looking at could also be too big for the room?

If you have 2 rooms, and not wall separating them, corner load the subwoofer. Do not put it in the middle of one wall. Also, you not going to get very good bass response in that room because of the layout.

Those Athena subs are very good for the money. Give a listen and see if you like them

Hello....

Is "corner load" the same as "putting in the corner"? Otherwise I am at a loss with that suggestion.

I am real limited on locations and one of the places is between the HDTV and the left front floor standing speaker. being between the two will partly send the sound forward as well as any front driving depending on the style of speaker.

I am still curious about the footage question. How did Athena rate their speakers on room size. If they think the AS-P4000 is the right size sub for rooms under 400 ft, should I only look at similarly rated subs for my 195ft room? Even if you factor in the adjacent room, that is till at or under the 400 foot rule. Most of the subs I am looking at are more than the 100W of the 4000.
