Another Recomendation thread: Sat/Sub?

So my brother has caught the bug again after listening to my system lately and wants something for his apartment. The problem is that he doens't have the floor space for towers and I haven't really lokked at anything but for a while. One of the things he likes best is the soundstage (imaging?) that my front speakers can project (AGA Ref 3.1s.) Any recomendations on sat/sub systems out there that can produce a great soundstage and imaging?

Thanks y'all.

What is his budget? I like my studio 20s or you could sub in 40s if you have the money. The 20s' have decent bass for such a small speaker. If I was gonna add a sub it wouldn't need to be that big. Maybe a PB10 or a small SVS sub plus some Studio 40s. That would be QUITE the system.

If your budget is a little lower, I just bought my g/f a set of JBl e20s and they sound great to be so small. We plan to use them as rears. I have considered buying a pair of E30s to run as Zone 2s when I move.

If I has was ballin on a budget, I would get Axiom M22tis ($450ish) and an AV123 sub ($242 shippid) and have a nice system for under $800

In off-roading there's a saying that you travel at a speed as slow as possible and as fast as necessary. If I can find a full surround set and sub for under 2K I wouldn't mind recomendng that, but I"m sure he'd be happier in the 1K to 1.5k range.

The rears will need to be wall mounted I think due to his room layout.

IMHO this is an excellent recommendation.

I would tell him to go with a 3.1 system: M22 + matching center, and the x-sub. Should be around a grand, then if he really likes this stuff then he can wire in some in-walls later.

Yea I just got the AV123 sub and it is nice, and not big at all. It was a nice addition to my Studio 20's, but it had to be taken to the girlfriends house, since she payed for it.

If he likes a big sound stage he should look into Mirage or an Omni polar company.

He could get some Sats. from them and add a sub from Hsu, SVS, or AV123.

Hi.

He might also want to look at the Orb Audio setup. WWW.Orbaudio.com The Orb sats and Super Eight sub blend wonderfully together, offer up a really big soundstage and sound very smooth and effortless. The Super Eight sub is especially nice, offering up really warm, tight bass for music but still delivering plenty of boom and bang for movies - all in a small 12" x 12" box. For around a grand, he could go with the basic home theater system and upgrade the center with an additional Orb. That would run about $930, give or take, shipped to his door. 30-day trial period is painless. They have many nice and inexpensive wall mounting options as well. He can also upgrade his mains with additional Orbs later too if he wants. My dad has this setup in a smaller room and it's pretty sweet. The Orbs look great too and really disappear in the room. My mom likes that!

Another thought is the Definitive Technology ProCinema 800 sats and 1000 center as they are pretty sweet too. I am actually running them with the Orb Super Eight sub in a 14' x 24' room and couldn't be happier with my purchase.

Just some thoughts.

Cheers. :)

HAHA yea I wish, I have been dropping $$ on her JBl setup, so far she has a set of E20s as rears and just ordered her some E30s. The reason she payed fir it was 1: it's going in her apt, 2: I don't need a sub now, because I am never home.

Ugh, I don't envy your task, the choices are almost endless in that price range. Is your brother a movie fan and wants thunderous bass?, or does he need small speakers? It's had to go wrong with one of the Ascend package deals by all reports. I have not heard them myself. I happen to like my Paradigm Studio 20's a lot. Had them for six years and they still please me.

S.A. Amplifier: LF and RF.

Hi, I know this is off topic, but how does the amp perform, and how audible is the fan?

Thanks,

George

First off, I wanted to say thanks to every one who offered a suggestion. I really appreciate the suggestions and guess its time to start digging through the selections.

Hi George, not a problem, always happy to talk about the rig. To be completely honest until you mentioned it I kinda forgot that it had active ventilation. That should say something there. I believe I've heard in once in over a year now and it was after I have just powering off the system and the room was dead quiet.

For comparison purposes my Dell computer is about 50dB or so and I can hear that sitting in a quiet room, I have never heard the fan during operation on my S.A.

As for performance issues, I can drive my 3.1s cleanly at any volume I have pushed them to. That may not say much with my old receiver, but the S.A. really does a wonderful job. There are times when I get home from work and forget to turn the Amp on just run everything through my receiver. The sound still amazes me and then I remember to switch on the S.A. (most of the time it comes on with the receiver but for safety I physically power down my system if I'm away for a long time.) and it is amazing.

You go from having a phenominal full range set of speakers up front to having a set of speakers that still suprise me to this day when they go that low. I have never maxed out the S.A., never heard it clip (never tried though). Once I finish upgrading my system with a new primary amplifier then I think I can really push it.

Initially purchased the amp for a number of reasons, 1.) I live in a small apartment in NY and just don't have a lot of excess space so this was a stop gap before purchasing a subwoofer. Hopnestly I can easily preasurize my room with the 3.1s, one day I'll get my SVS sub that I dream about, but I have never found myself needing anything else on the low end. 2.) My last set of speakers were a Reference Pair of Infinity 15"s that were full range and I didn't think I could live with the lack of low end extension. I was wrong, not only am I living with smaller speakers (physically speaking) but with the S.A. they play lower and cleaner than my Infinity's ever could have dreamed. 3.) I bought my speakers and my amp together because I really trust the guy that I buy from...he has an impecible ear IMHO and knows his stuff. When we discussed it and thought that it would be a good option for my space, I agreed.

If you're looking at the Ref 3.1s now, listen first without the S.A. the relisten with it, you'll hear the differnce. If you've had you're Ref 3s/3.1s for a while and want to enhance what you have then I'd say go for it. I notice a difference with mine. It still surpises me when it goes that low and makes me smile every time. To me thats the sign of quality equipment.

Good luck, if you have any more questions, feel free to shoot me a message.
