I am in the market for a home theater system. I am researching to find the best buy. I will primarily use this for watching movies but I do enjoy listening to some good music and I want great sound. I have been using an onkyo receiver for years and have had nothing but a good experience with it. I am not sure if I want 7.1 6.1 or 5.1 system? Any thoughts would be appreciated. I have read the review on the 2400 and though sounding very promising the only thing I don’t like is when listening to 2 channel music from what I understand is it does not have sub output and for the speakers I am running that is a must. I am leaning towards another onkyo product but my mind is wide open for suggestions. With all the knowledgeable folks on this site this appears to be the best place to get those questions answered. My price range is around 2000.00 for the receiver.

Again thank for any advice

The Yamaha does have the sub output. I had an old Onkyo that I never liked from the day I got it home. It was the most reliable receiver I had ever owned, but had to add an eq to get the sound I wanted. It was underpowered, and I am sure if I had spent more I would have been more satisfied. I replaced it with a Yamaha rx-v1400. These units, that being the 1400 & the 2400, are awesome. You can have 5.1 now, and they have all the goodies to go 6.1 and 7.1. They also have an eq built in. For me, I like my treble a little higher than flat, & I like to bring the mids in the vocal range down below flat. It is just a personal preferance. I was pleased to have this feature. I would describe the Yamaha sound as less digital, and more realistic.
Back to your question, the receiver will output the lfe signal during 2 channel stereo. Also, I went with the 1400 because it cost $200 less and is only a little less powerful, 110w x 7. IMO, that is plenty!

Just wanted to add that I got my 1400 for $581.50 to my door. I DID NOT get a manufacturer's warranty. The shipping took a long time, and it was a big P.I.T.A. But, I did get a brand new rx-v1400 that retails for $799 at a super price! I am pleased, BUT I will not buy from these grey market websites in the future due to the fact I worried to death waiting for it to arrive and I still am left with no warranty. I would try to be sure to get it from an authorized dealer.

Hi,
In your price range I thing you should seriously audition the the 38 and 48 series of reciever in the Denon lineup. You might also want to do a search of thse forums for opinions.

Personally I started with an entry level Onkyo the 575 which I still use for 2ch music in another room and it is a tireless workhorse as it hasen't been turned off in 4 years and then went to Denon.

I had decided that I wanted a Flagship reciever and the one with the most power and was also going into the hirez formats. At the time only the Denon had 2 sets of analog ins and 170w perch all channels driven. I think that is still the case.

Anyway, for quality of build and features Denon is the way to go.
If you want lots of DSP modes for 2 ch (which I feel you'll tire of quickely) and a well regarded reciever Yamaha also is derigeur and has a great feature for price combination. Even though I'm a Denon guy, I know you would be happy with a Yammy also.

Goodluck,
Peter m.

On the review given for the 2400 one of the listed cons is no sub output in 2-channel direct mode. Is there another 2-channel mode that has sub output? This being my only hang-up on this receiver I would like to make sure before purchasing

Again thank you for any feedback.

Wow, I just learned something new about my receiver.
OK, here goes. In direct stereo mode all frequencies played through the front left & front right, no sub. But in 2 channel stereo mode, it sends the low frequencies to the sub, & mid & high to the mains. I do not need to use direct stereo due to the fact my mains have 6 1/2 woofer. They sounded pretty cool while I was checking it out though!
