You can do this! The first video is one i saw on youtube. The second is my attempt. I couldnt get the output that he did but It was definetly enough to hear the music. The camera didnt pick up on it as good in my video.

Very cool, Haoleb!

Why did you place the large open side of the cone on the record, as opposed to the needle end like that of the original video? IMO, that would explain why you didn't get the sound output that the original video achieved.

I got a bit louder and cleaner output with the large side since its only the tip of the one peice of paper. I had a harder time making the small tip with the smaller end of the cone, even with cutting it with scissors.

Is it any wonder I've got too much time on my hands?
It's ticking away with my sanity
I've got too much time on my hands
It's hard to believe such a calamity
I've got too much time on my hands...
and it's ticking away, ticking away from me.

Just for giggles I ripped a stylus off of a crappy cart and put it on the end of the paper and all i can say is wow! Its actually pretty impressive! Easily reaches the output the first video has but with alot more clarity. I took some videos of it but the camera mic doesnt get it very good, You can still barely hear it in the video although it can be easily heard from across the room. Its really fascinating to me how simple it is to make music come off of a peice of plastic.

I know that the original players were just as simple as this but its still cool to be able to make something that can play music in like 2 minutes with a peice of paper, a stylus, and a record. With the stylus it would be as good as speakers on a laptop except its hard to keep it in the groove. And probably not that great for my vinyl since you need pretty considerable force on the stylus

LMAO

Yeah magic is precisely what it is. Like the ole gramophones at around the early 20th century.

Nice one mate.:D

I’d hate to know what that needle is doing are you using a sewing needle are you?:D

It is possible to hear sounds "recorded" on ancient pottery as a result of the spinning of the potter's wheel. Probably a comparable level of fidelity.:)
