Another question from old school here...

Hey guys, another thing I wanted to ask. As you saw in my other thread I am looking to upgrade my speaker/receiver system. I would also like to get a nice HDTV. I have DirectTV, FYI. I was wondering, am I better off getting the stereo/surround sound system set up first and just use that with my 27" Sony Trinitron, which while old, still has a fantastic picture. OR should I get the big HDTV first and use that with my cheaper 10 year old Sony Reciever and surround sound system? Which I'm not sure if I can even do?? Then I could get the new audio componants later? I guess it's like which came first, the chicken or the egg. ?????

I havet be honest, I know NOTHING about HDTV. Maybe I'd be better off just getting a new regular TV that's bigger with a bigger picture? I don't know. I keep hearing that HDTV via satellite is great but that channels that aren't in HD don't look so hot. I'm wondering if it's even worth it? Once again, opinions/suggestions are greatly appreciated.

I got the sound system first and upgraded the TV later.

If I could do it again, I would have gotten the HDTV first.

Depends on where you place the higher priority - video or audio. If you listen to a lot of music, go with the new audio system first. If you mostly watch movies, start with a new TV. For me, audio comes first.

Audio is priority for me too but I also think it is more advantageous to have the audio system set up first because when you get your new TV delivered all you have to do is plug in the power and run the video cables from the receiver to the TV.

Questions, Questions and More Questions

I guess the real question should be, "What do you want when it's all done?"

Do you want a full blown home theater or just a scaled back television with surround sound?

How big is the room and is lighting an issue?

Do you want a flat panel display, a rear projection TV or a front projection system?

Do you want a 5.1 or 6.1 or 7.1 system and can your room support them?

What I'm trying to get at is that what you want to build up for should help guide your purchases.

EXAMPLE: If I wanted a decent front projection system or flat panel display I'd wait and buy that later since 1080P will continue to drop in price. I wouldn't spend a lot on a DVD player till the HD wars are pretty much over.

If you want a full blown system, the audio equipment will be the most expensive when you add up the speakers, receiver, subwoofer and of course wires (not that I'm saying you need to buy expensive wires. It just adds up).
