Another newcomer question

Thanks for the imput on speaker setup. This question is regarding the benefit of purchasing a better dvd player. I have been under the impression that every dvd player is basically the same. Why do some people suggest a $800 unit?? Does sound or picture quality increase substantially between a denon 2910 and your run of the mill best buy sony?? I am not that interested in super audio because most music i listen to is not available in these formats. Is there a point to spending the money, or would I be better off running dolby digital 5.1 through my xbox video game system??

Every DVD player is NOT the same, or there would be no reason to have anything but the $40 walmart ones. There are any number of factors that contribute to the differences, but the most glaringly obvious would be that the capabilities of the video decoding is of significance and can greatly affect the picture quality. Then there is also the progressive scan aspect, which the Xbox is not capable of (unmodified), which adds an additional dimension to the picture equation.

My recommendation is to ask specifically what people might recommend in the price range you have in mind. If you don't have an HD capable TV, then I'd say stick with your Xbox for now. If you do have an HD capable TV, then I'd be looking for a decent progressive scan player.

thanks. that makes a lot of sense. My television is not capable of HD, so I think youre right. I am going to keep xbox, (well actually buy the xbox360) and use it and put money in better speakers.

Speaker choice will do more justice to a system than most all other components combined, IMHO. Getting yourself established with a good set of speakers to begin with is a very wise decision ... grasshopper.
