Another impedance matching volume/switch question

The Niles would work fine for the "switching" however there is no independent control for each room. You would be better off using a speaker selector with built-in volume controls or place volume controls in each location. The problem with using the volume control from your receiver is that it is universal for all speaker location, so if you turn it down, it goes down in all locations (which might not be what you want) The price for the Niles is high, you can find others of the same quality for less, see the links I posted above.
Well, that was my concern, that the price of the niles box with individual volume control is quite a bit higher than just the switch. One of the problems with this particular setup is, the wiring is already in place, and no volume controls were installed in the rooms; wires are hanging from various celing corners in the rooms. I do understand that they won't have independent control in each room, but without additional wiring, I'm not sure how I would achieve that with the current setup anyway, aside from independent volume controls at the source, which means they still can't do it while they are in a given room. I did get them a RF addon for their remote so they can control the volume via a remote anywhere in the house, and with the SS-4 they would at least be able to turn off various zones (manually) as needed.

If you feel up to it you could run the existing speaker lines down to a volume control and then just run a new line up to the speakers. I tried to PM you but it seems that you can't get them?

Sometimes I don't check PMs, so I left it off, but you can always e-mail me directly.

They don't want to pay for additional wiring, thus a good portion of my problem with this install. That would be the "right" way to do it, though the controls would be in weird parts of the rooms, since the previous owner dropped the wires along walls where there are no switches and no nice places to drop a VC in and not have it stick out like a sore thumb (without relocating the VC to a nicer spot).

It's an older house, so I have good access above and below, so maybe I will have to talk them into redoing some of the wiring down the road, and use something like the SS4 as an interim solution. I also noticed right away that the previous owner/installer did not use in-wall wire.
