hi guys! I'm extremely new to this stuff, so here goes: I'm trying to hook my reciever to my computer. since sending a digital mono signal to the reciever eliminates my ability to play games in 5.1, I'm now trying a theory of plugging in 3 mini stereo (comp side) to rca cables in the "6 channel" part of my reciever. the only problem thus ecountered (I still have to run and get more cables) is that my sub won't play from the 6 channel slot. let me find a picture... here:

when plugged into the bottom sub out spot it will play, but only for the connection to the right of the 6 channel area. the plug doesnt fit into the 6 channel hole. it's too long, and unlike my other cables its.... curved? like, normal rca end pieces but they rise and fall (should I feel silly right now?). anyway, I'm just wondering if I can pick up some kind of converter somewhere so I can use my sub in 6 channel mode. thanks in advance!

You say "Digital Mono" signal. When you say this I assume you mean that you running what's called "Digital Coax Out" from you soundcard (an orange plug) to the "Digital Coax In" on your reciever. This signal is NOT mono, but is 5.1, 6.1, 7.1, 2.0, 1.0, whatever. Just try it and see.

Most games are in EAX surround, not Dolby Digital 5.1 - so the only way to get Dolby Digital (5.1) is to have a sound card that does the conversion in real time. The nForce2, for one, does this (or can) and it's on many popular motherboards - but it has to have the option enabled. A dead giveaway is an nForce2 motherboard with coax digital output.

If you don't have this - then you need to use the 1/8" minis out of your PC to the 5.1 RCA pre-ins of your receiver (three 1/8" mini to RCA cables). One of these 6 RCA inputs is for the sub INPUT from the sound card's sub OUTPUT. Read your sound card manual for more info.

At that point you still need to run the OUTPUTS of the receiver to your speakers and sub like normal (speaker level outputs to the speakers, and the RCA line level output to the subwoofer.)

After this - happy gaming!

alright, I gave up on digital. I think I'm officially on best buys devil customer list for cable returning. I've been there so many times recently the guy at the door feels he knows me well enough to call me "curly". as for my previous sub problem (you'll laugh) I had the line from the sub connected to the sub IN on the 6 channel input area. anyway, so now I have 3 mini stero jack to rca cables running from my audigy 2 to my recievers 6 channel imput pannel and I have complete surround sound in games and movies! but in music I can't get my sub to play. everywhere else it seems to work well... any thoughts? aside from suicidal ones. I'm finding plenty of those myself from this mess ;)
