A receiver's ability to 'up-convert' analog to HDMI video. How important is this and what does it mean? Can someone break this down please? The Denon AVR788 has HDMI version 1.3...does this receiver have the converting ability (can't seem to find the answer). Thanks in advance.

It refers to a receiver's ability to take the video signal from several sources (2 or more dvd players or whatever) via optical or component, and send them all (one at a time, of course) through one singular hdmi cable to your screen or projector. Not necessary if you're never to have more than one source.

Transcoding? That's the ability to take the input signal from one kind of connection and send the signal out through another type of connection; taking, for example, the signal from a composite video connection from the cable box, and sending it to the TV over HDMI.

It's in the manual on page eight. And Johnd is correct, it will not transcode to HDMI (however it will to component).

Receiver features

The only advantage of video conversion to HDMI is to reduce the number of cables from your receiver and to allow you to use the same input on the TV for all sources. It is a convenince but not a critical feature for most people.
