I bought my brother the Def 7004 pair of speakers and he is listening only in stereo, and his receiver is very old and only has left & right in puts from the source, CD player DVD etc. He only intends to listen in stereo, so if he ops for a new receiver with optical or coaxal inputs, with the analog sound be a bit more sharper and actually an up grade in listening? I was thinking about the Harman Kardon HK 3490 for him, but now I am not sure if this would be a waste of money? The HK has optical and coaxal inputs. Thaks for your inputs!!

I had an H/K a few years ago and it sounded great to me. Very dynamic and warm, very smooth. As was already stated, it's gonna depend on the DACs since they handle the conversion process. Hard to say if it's better or not without knowing what receiver he was using to begin with, but I think H/K makes very nice sounding units. I would be pleased, but to each his own...

I would get a 5.1/7.1 receiver with the Direct Mode for stereo music. I would also just hook up via digital input like HDMI, Optical, or Coaxial.

DACs and all that are important, but these days, practically all the DACs in HK, Denon, Yamaha, Onkyo, etc., are so good you won't hear the difference.

Depends on his sources DACs.
+1. Unless you get a high end CD player, the AVR DACs are most likely going to be comparable if not better.

WalMart CD player, low end AVR = use either

WalMart CD player, mid to upper AVR = user AVR with Digital from CD player

Ref CD player, mid to upper level AVR = use CD player analog to AVR

Ref CD player, high end AVR = use whichever is better

I don't really see a benefit to upgrading at all if he is only interested in a 2 channel audio.
Is there an issue with his setup other than being aged?
