Analog or Toslink cable

I have a very old receiver (30 years) and wanted to connect it to the Apple Airport Express. Should I just use the 3.5mm jack to the rca cables or do I need to use the toslinbk cable to a DCA then the rca cables? Is that really necessary since the receiver is just analog anyway?

Somehow I doubt your "30 year old" receiver has digital inputs...
Just use 3.5 mm to Red/White (analog)

unless you will get noticeable issues with builtin Apple Dac (like Noise) just stick with it. Toslink Dacs are not cheap - I got mine Audioengine D1 to separate audio from tons of RF noise coming from new video card

IME, the Apple AE's analog outputs are passable; I didn't notice any great difference when the toslink cable from my Airport Express to my old HK receiver snapped and I substituted an analog 3.5mm to RCA connector. Given that it'll cost you a buck or two to try it out, it's worth a shot in any event.
