Just purchased a new CD player that has 2 options to connect to my receiver and since i already have 2 analog cables I just conencted and everything worked fine. Does anyone know if the Optical cable will make a difference if I go out and purchase 1 to replace the existing analog cables?

Thanks in advance.

If you use an optical cable, that means the receiver's DAC (digital-to-analog converter) will do the job instead of the one inside your CD player. If your receiver has a higher quality DAC, you may notice a difference.

Some people prefer to leave the digital-to-analog conversion until the last possible moment in the signal chain, which in your case would be inside the receiver. The reason for this is simple: an audio signal running along an analog cable is susceptible to interference which could degrade the sound quality, while a digital fiber optic cable is essentially free from data loss.

To be honest though, if you have decent enough analog cables, you may not even notice the difference. You can always try it out though - just return the fiber optic cable if you don't see a benefit!

Plus, if you get or have some DTS cds, they'll play in DTS surround. Mine does. I'm guessing they all will, that have the digital connection.......

If all you are doing is 2.0 stereo music listening, you should be fine. There certainly is no harm in trying the optical connection to see if there is a difference in the sound.

My 2 cents

all the music I listen to is from my cd player. I do however have both coax and analog connected. I listen in 2.1 and prefer the sound in analog direct. The digital playback(IMO) sounds a bit brighter and also my mp3 disc's don't play back in digital format due to copyright laws.

I tried both analog high end interconnects as well as digital optical with my new setup and couldnt really tell anything between the two

Well I actually did not spend any money on the older analog connectors as I had plenty of them left over from the old analog days. I did spend $20 or so on some new opticals though

Going from good quality interconnects to optical made a nice difference for me. Voices in movies became a lot less sibilant and music seems a bit more detailed and 'sparkly' (in a good way).
