Analog cables for BD55

I hope this is the right forum to be asking this question as I don't want to get in trouble. I found a thread here earlier that sort of answered my question, but can't find it again. I just ordered a Panasonic BD55 which will be used with a Yamaha V659 receiver and a soon to arrive Samsung plasma. If I remember correctly it said component cables could be used for analog audio connections. I may not be stating it correctly but I hope someone will understand what I'm trying to say. Not exactly sure what 5.1 analog audio cables are. I have looked at cables on Monoprice and they stated that a pair of their component cables would serve this purpose.

I am hoping that someone can verify that for me or please tell me what Monoprice cables I need to purchase. I'm embarassed by my ignorance to be asking for help here where everyone else seems so knowledgeable.

I just used 2 set of components cables no longer in use. If you're going to use single cables like the ones from monoprice, I'd suggest you label them to ensure you don't cross your cables into the wrong input. I know www.bluejeanscable.com make m/c analog cables of excellent quality but IMO they're an expensive alternative.

The first thing to know about is WHAT 5.1 analog output is and what it means...

If the player internally decodes all your surround it can then output that surround sound via HDMI or on analog audio outputs. Typically this looks like this on the back of your Blu-ray player...

You can see on the right, there are 6 RCA connectors which are the front L&R, the surround L&R, the center, and the subwoofer. That's 5.1 analog OUTPUT.

On the back of your A/V receiver you will have a similarly matching 5.1 analog input...

You can see, on the DVD input there are 6 RCA connectors labelled similarly for L&R main/surround audio with center and subwoofer.

So, 5.1 audio is connected from your Blu-ray/DVD player to the receiver using 6 analog audio RCA cables. Since almost any well made 75ohm cable will carry the audio fine, you just need 6 individual RCA cables.

Which means you need EITHER:
6 of these...

OR
3 of these...

OR
2 of these...

with one of the original RCA cables...

The bottom line is that you need a total of 6 individual RCA-ended cables to make an analog 5.1 audio connection which will carry HD audio.

Of course, if you have a 7.1 audio setup in your home, that means you will need a total of 8, not 6 RCA ended analog audio connections. Really, much easier than it may sound to you.

Is there any reason you couldn't run the sub output directly to your powered sub instead of into the receiver?

Don't analog inputs bypass the receivers processing anyway?

You could, but everytime you watch a regular SD-DVD utilizing digital audio via optical or coaxial digital connections, you'd be forced to go and swap which cable is connected to the sub.

Thanks. This is really good and clears it up for me pretty well. I just had a mental block about the type cables I needed and your answer was perfect. I'm going to order from Monoprice today and should have everything I need by the time my BD55 gets here. The new plasma should be delivered on Friday. Can't wait.

Thanks here and to everyone who took time to help. Cables For Dummies might sell.

Am I right to assume that the color coding on the cables won't make any difference when making the connection if I use component cables?

Hey Minus

When I hook up my 7.1 analog I will be using two sets of analog cables (yellow, red, white) to achieve the 5.1. Cable posted below

http://www.home-theater-accessories-resource.com/Images/Pictures/composite cable.jpg

For the surround back connection I will be using 1 pair of analog cables like this

http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/4/4a/Cinch-Stecker.jpg/800px-Cinch-Stecker.jpg

I will be using cables that came with VCR's that were bought years and years ago:eek:.

they may work but I don't know for certain? FWIW if they're capable of carrying the minimum 75 ohm impedance required to carry the bandwith needed for HD audio and have proper sheilding, then they could work. I just preferred not to use the supplies cables from any of my purchases because I had better ones on hand.:)

I have read searching some other forums people using the red, white, yellow analog cables for multichannel analog? I have not used any type of analog cable in years so I am pretty much a newb when it comes to analog connections. I am not sure on the impedance of these cables but when and if I can hook them up, if there is any interference from improper sheilding I think it would be very noticable and would need to be replaced. Not sure if they are 75 ohm?

The monoprice analog cables state:

"These premium quality cables feature thick RG59u, 75 ohm coax cables with 22AWG solid copper center conductor and heavy duty gold plated, corrosion resistant connectors. They are perfect replacements for the thin, generic interconnect cables that are typically thrown in when you by audio components".

So is there really any difference between these and stock cables you get with a vcr, dvd player, cable box etc besides better shielding? I do not mind buying new cables but it would be nice to use the ones I have laying around the house if possible.

I am even more confused :confused::confused:
