An HDTV, Cable Box and DVD player walk into a bar..

Hey all, looking for a little help if you could. I understand my setup here is not ideal, however, it's the best I can do at the time. The breakdown:


LDC HDTV with HDMI and Component In

HD Cable box with Component out and HDMI

DVD/Home Theater combo with HDMI, component, analog audio


I'd like all three to work as a team. I would assume that the best connection from HDTV to Cable Box would be HDMI, not Component? My problem is that would leave the Home Theater/DVD connection to the TV being analog, which mean i'd lose the surround sound on TV programs right?


The TV has yet to be purchased, would one with two HDMI be better? Then I can connect the Cable box to one and the DVD/Theater to the other? I'm somewhat confused if that would give me to play the surround sound of the TV through the DVD/theater, or if you have to tune the TV to one HDMI or the other.

If any of this makes sense, i'd love some help.

Unless your "DVD/Home Theater combo with HDMI, component, analog audio" has another type of audio input, such as digital coax (usually an orange jack) or toslink, you're right. You're stuck with analog inputs, and the best you can get from that is DPL, not true digital surround.

You give up many options when you sell your soul to one of these "all in one" units in the hope of simplifying everything.

Riiight. Do you think I'd be stupid enough to bring the last conversation back into light and prove you right? Believe it or not, I'm buying a new television and therefore, have a different issue. If you look, you'd realize it's a different situation. But you showed me!

Well, actually, I see the solution to your problem.

But, with your attitude I won't. Maybe someone else will, but since you were so adamant in refusing to share information with the forum, not just me, I don't know why anyone would want to.

But, if you're as clever as you think you are, you would be able to figure it out for yourself. It's treally quite simple.
