I recently purchased a Samsung LN 3251D 32 inch LCD TV. It's beautiful. I use it for movies, for family photo slide shows (it's connected to a laptop) and for over the air digital TV viewing (I don't have and don't want cable TV)
My current DVD connection is component cables from my old 480i --> Denon 3806 receiver--> Samsung TV, both connections are component. The picture on the TV looks great, with the TV handling all the scaling and deinterlacing.
Here's my question: The Denon 3806 has HDMI, including analog to HDMI conversion. When I try to run HDMI from the receiver to the TV, the TV says 'Not Supported Mode,' which means it detects a signal but won't show it. The TVs HDMI interface supports HDCP (high def copy protection), and the Denon says it supports HDCP as well, but of course the analog video signals in to the receiver don't have these HDCP flags. Does HDCP rule out analog-HDMI conversions?
The TV has two HDMI inputs and I have tried them both, and I have tried the different HDMI out settings on the Denon. Denon is set to do analog to HDMI conversion. The Samsung TV takes 480i inputs over the air and from the component connections, the manual does not say that 480i over HDMI is not supported so I assume that it is supported.
So I'm just wondering: does HDCP mean only pure digital and copy protected sources can be shown over HDMI?
I don't have an HDMI source to use at the moment. I assume that the HDMI interface on the TV works as it is supposed to, since every other aspect of the TV that I can test is perfect.
Any thoughts? Have other folks encountered this problem?
