Hey guys, Ok so to some of you this may seem like a stupid question. I just purchased a Denon AVR5308CI to start building a home theatre system. It is VERY important to me to have THX and utilize THX Ultra 2 formated speakers. However people are telling me i should consider getting a preamp or a few amps cause the Denon wont give the power im going to want to power THX certified speakers. I also purchased a Monster Signature Series™ HTPS 7000 MKII PowerSource as a surge protector and for the clean power. actually im not sure why i needed it but i was told its what to get.

What kind of Amplifier should i get and is it needed. also how would i hook it up to the Denon Reciver?

Thanks for everyones help. im quite blonde when it comes to understanding the sound system set up, but i love gizmos!

First, welcome to the forum!

The Denon 5308CI is a very, very nice receiver with some good power behind it. I have no personal experience with it, but it's well above the equipment that I own. I'd think that it would be just fine without any separate amps. However, what speakers are you wanting to drive with it?

Thank You! I was thinking about getting freestanding Atlantic Technology 8200e, and wall mounted surrounds by the same company. do you have any surgestions? i would like to keep with THX certified speakers to ensure great sound. but im always in need of good advice! lol :D

you connect the separate amp to the pre-outs of the 5308™
I agree that you do not need amps for that kind of receiver, but in case you like to listen loud in a big room, I would get a 2 or 3 channel amp for the front left and right (and perhaps center) and use the receiver to power the rest of the speakers.

Thanks Mike. Any recommendations for speakers? obviously for 7.1.

I don't have any brand suggestions. The only suggestions that I have are to audition speakers yourself and determine what you like. Speaker preference is very personal. What one person loves, another may hate. There are those who have measured the frequency response of speakers and who will state which speakers (in their estimation) provide the best response, but that doesn't necessary equate to the greatest satisfaction for every person. Now, this doesn't have to be a two-decade quest for the perfect speaker. Just audition what you can until you find something that pleases you - at which point, you've found something that makes you happy! All that really matters, IMO, is that you are happy with your system.

I think the best peice of advice that can be given is dont limit yourself to only buying things that are THX certified. Most of the best products on the market are not THX certified, Especially Speakers. The fact is that some products sell themselves because of what they deliver vs marketing (THX) Not to say that whatever your considering and THX certified products arent good but just try and focus more on getting something with the sound and looks and pricerange that you want vs a logo. :)

As far as the power conditioner goes, Its not a bad thing to have around, But the fact is you dont "need" it and could have got by with something that would offer most of what that unit does for alot less coin. Sorry :(

Why is THX important to you? I'm just asking since you say you bought the Monster surge protector because you were told to, but don't really know why. I just wonder why a novice would place so much emphasis on this one feature at the potential risk of eliminating some fine speakers from consideration. For example, I don't see (after quite a search of their site) that B&W speakers are THX certified. It would be a shame not to audition them simply over the THX certification.

Edit - see that...I spent so much time looking for a mention of THX on B&W's site that Haoleb beat me to posting by half an hour. They may well be certified, but they sure don't advertise it.

Unless your speakers go below 2 ohms, I don't see how you would need any external amps when you have the awesome Denon 5308.

I would seriously question those people who told you that you needed an external amp for the 5308!
