Can you set-up a typical 5 channel HT amp on its side for space constraints (ie. like a car amp), or is that not a good move?

if you don't care about shortening the lifespan of your amp ... it'd be ok.

otherwise, there's a reason the heat vents are on top of the amp :)
when you orient if on it's side, heat dissipation would be compromised.

Read the manual. If nothing is mentioned, call the manufacturer. They don't assume people will do it but when you position it in a way that's not normal WRT the original design, it won't necessarily cool as well as it needs to. With Onkyo, specifically, this can be a problem. If the heat sinks were external, like a car amp, it would be different but even a car amp will melt down if there's not enough space around it.

Thanks for the replies. I guess I will contact B&K and see if it is OK. I did try it for a day and it seemed hot on the bottom and cooler towards the top, so that may spell trouble.:(

If the HEAT Vents are on the side fine, if on the TOP, you better go with the feet down, or you'll be buying a couple receivers a year.
