I have I Kenwood VR6070 that I love for movies, but feels that it falls short with music. Can I use the preouts and hook up to an external Amp, hoping to achieve a more warm, rich characteristic sound? In other words, can a separate amplifier (say, from Adcom) produce a different signature/characteristic sound (i.e. more warm, rich, and dynamic)?

Yes a different amp will produce different sound, obviously it will be an improvement over the Kenwood amp, due to higher caps, and its own large power transformer.

If i remeber correctly the 6070 is THX certified and has 96kHz/24bit DACs too so preamp outs will be good.

Bob,

Thats nice to here. I have a 6070 and am not happy with the audio quality.
I will be upgrading. I have a few options I may do. A Pre/pro and amp is on the list.

I might be able to get the Amp first and use the 6070 as a pre/pro.

The pre/pro + amp route is way too expensive for most cases. If you are looking for good audio, presumably 2-channel, try Yamaha receivers. I know the RX-V series has EXCELLENT 2-channel quality, given you use the built-in DAC, i.e., feed digital signal from CD/DVD player directly into the receiver. I've tried separate DAC + power Amp MSRP over $5000 but sonically no better than my $399 RX-V496 !

Abe,

You are absolutely right about the amp section in Yamaha recievers, they are quite good but not as good as their own class A power amps the like of MX-1000/MX-1, but compared to others, they are really very good. The only stipulation with Yamaha amps in general is that they be matched to the right speakers or it can be a real jarring experience.

The d/a on CDX-496 and other Yamaha CDP are of real good quality and What CD in U.K. gave the S-Bit plus DAC real good review. If you use the d/a on the RXV-1 or DSP-AZ1, they are of fantastic quality with quite revealing sound.
