Hi all, new to this site.

A few years ago I purchased a Technics SA-DX940 AV Receiver. I use it solely for watching films and have 5 Technics SS AFC 140 surround speakers and had an Eltax SW20 active sub attached via a single RCA type plug. I have enjoyed the good sound that it makes with no problems until recently. A few weeks ago the Eltax started buzzing. I was obvious that something was wrong so I went out and bought a Yamaha YST SW015. Within a hour the Yamaha had packed in. The back of it was red hot. I promptly took it back to the shop and got another. The same thing happened again. I spoke directly to Yamaha who state that they would sort it out with the dealer. The said they did not know of any probs with that sub but would check it out. They said there was nothing that I could have done that would cause that sort of problem. The man in the shop appeared highly suspicious of me but gave me a loan of another sub meantime, JPW 315. I have obviously been watching this one closely but it appears to be getting very hot as well. I have unplugged it fearing that it may go the same way. I have plugged it into another amp and yes it does get hot but not as hot as it gets plugged into the Technics. What can be causing this.......Anyone?

Kinda weird.
Have you tried using front speaker terminals to the sub, then on to your speakers( provided your sub has them) ?

Never thought of that but I'll give it a try. That should rule out if there is anything dodgy being passed through the rca type cable. Think I might get it checked out by a technics guy anyway. What could be getting passed down the line that would cause that type of problem? Would just connecting the front speakers to the sub pick up all the other bass from the remaining channels?

I personally don't think this is a problem with the technics. I really wonder about your incoming power for these components. Have you checked the ac voltage? Is it possible you have some type of strange ground loop? Try plugging both the technics and the sub into the same outlet..

I agree that it most likely is a problem with your power source,i would think that your sub would be plugged into a different outlet than the rest of your gear..........is that the case? if so i would try a different power outlet on a seperate breaker than the one its on now, sounds to me like you have way too much voltage comming into the sub.

You should have a volt meter in th ehouse and check the voltage on that outlet. Some homes have wiring so that if there is a problem with the neutral, you might get 240V on it?

The sub is plugged into a socket on its own, well one side of a twin socket. my tv, sat, dvd & amp are all on a surge protected trailing socket sharing the other side of this twin socket. I only have a small house and it would appear that all the sockets are on the same breaker. The socket they are plugged into was an additional one I had installed especially for the tv. It was a spur taken from another twin socket in the same room. This other socket only has a small light plugged into it. I have a mate who's an electrician so I'll get him to look at it. Cheers people..
