Amp and/or receiver?

I have a pair of Kef iQ3s for computer listening use. I don't have a spare receiver so I've been running them off the built-in amp that came with my logitech Z-5500s but I'm looking to set them up properly. I have a Xonar STX, which as I understand, has an excellent DAC so I'm wondering if I should maybe forgo the receiver and just get an amp? My only concern is regarding a subwoofer - I intend to add one at some point, but as I understand, amps are "dumb" devices that don't do any sort of processing, so is my only choice for 2.1 sound a receiver after all?

Hi,

You can get a used Denon Stereo receiver with two sets of speakers (A & B), three Zones capability, and with a subwoofer output (sub pre out).

So, yes, a Stereo receiver (amp + preamp + tuner) would be the best for your situation. And one that have a subwoofer output.
Good places to check for great deals are Audiogon and Videogon.

For example, the Denon DRA-297 retails normally for $299, but I'm sure you can find it for quite cheaper than that; just check around.
The Denon DRA-297 does have a subwoofer output, very convenient feature. :)

Also, there is the Marantz SR4021 Stereo receiver with a powerful 80 watts per channel, which have Preamp out/Main in, so it is also very convenient to add a subwoofer. It is normally retailing for $449.99, but it is on sale right now for only $199.99 at Accessories 4 Less.

arent there a ton of pre amps out there that would do what you want? even if you didnt want HT you could get a 5.1 preamp and set it up for 2.1. I'd look at B&K refereance 30 is very reasonable to buy right now.. and there may even be 2.1 pre amps as well.

you can still use your DAC with any of these.

just another thought..

Thanks for the tips. One question about that Marantz stereo receiver - is the pre-out on it the same as a sub pre-out? Or is there something more in between that I need to get an LFE signal?

Smart question.

Very smart question. To make full use of that feature from the Marantx Receiver, you need a subwoofer with Low Level (RCA jacks) In and Out.

So, from the Marantz Preamp Out, you run that stereo interconnect (or mono, using a Y connector) to the Low Level In from the subwoofer.
And from the Marantz Main In, you run a stereo interconnect (or mono, using a Y connector) to the Low Level Out from the subwoofer.

If your subwoofer is equipped with Low Level In & Out (Mono or Stereo, don't matter), then you're in business.

If not, there are some Stereo receivers that have a dedicated Subwoofer Pre Out, like the Denon DRA-297. The DRA-297 list for $299 USA.

You can check at some discount stores that carry Denon products, for a much better price. This is a very nice Stereo Receiver (I know, my brother just love his, the same model). With also Zone 3 capability (it has also stereo pre outs).

Cheers,

Bob
