Hello Guys,
thought I had to share with you my latest SW “tweaking experience”, so here it goes:
my HT room is rectangular (19 x 10 x 8’ ) and there’s a wooden rack from one side to another (10’) and inside there I have all my gears.
On top I have a TV set, + the front speakers.
Due to space constraints I never had the chance to put the SW at either, corner or center front; instead I used to have it placed alongside the left wall, midway position and so far, so good.
Well, yesterday I decided to do some changes, so I moved the SW to the only place I could put it, without causing a “domestic traffic jam”; there is, right beside the rear sofa, in a corner, where I had an end table to put the wireless phone & the remotes.
Afterwards, I choose 2 well recorded DVD’s to perform a test (being Star Wars – The Revenge of the Sith & The Eagles – Farewell Tour I – Live in Australia), and I was literally blown away by the “new sound”, to say the least. The bass was much more pronounced, cleaner & punchier.
There are 2 sofas in the room, being one besides the SW and the other one at front and the sensation I felt was like there was those bass shakers inside them, mainly at the front sofa. I brought the wife & kids and the WOW factor became average and they all got impressed as well.
Most probably this may not sound weird to you guys, but I was intrigued by the fact that the general rule of thumb states that the SW should be positioned at front, prefereably close to the corners. In my case, I put it backwards and immediately felt a tremendous difference in performance, up to the point that this little boy (PB10-ISD) will remain there forever.
Have also read some theories saying that the place the SW sounds best is the best place to be, which I believe it’s true!
In case someone wants to chime in, just go ahead.
Cheers / Avliner.
