Nifty, but not new. They've had one of those at the local Hands On museum for as long as I can remember.

Very cool, but his design is a bit overkill...

There really is no need to sync the drops to the LED's.

i remeber doing the same trick in the kitchen sink with a strobe light. The effect was the same and nothing synced up.

A 555 timer circuit driving a big FET to switch the LED's is all that is really needed.
