Sorry for the Noob ???`s but I could not find anything relavent w/ a search. I have a Sony BVD SI1000 blu-ray HT. I hate the subwoofer. It cracks and pops at even nominal levels and has no real deep bass. It is not powered and the reciever has no RCA jacks for a powered one. What options do I have for some serious bass response, primarily for movies. I know that I could buy a receiver and sub, but I was hoping just to buy a new sub that would perform well and be compatible w/ the Sony HT. I called Sony sales and they do not make anything that is compatible out of the box. Thanks in advance for your patience and help with a rookie!!!

There are passive subs out there but the Sony is not going to have enough power for them.

Welcome to the forum!

Let me look into your system and see what I can think of. I'm looking for information on that system right now.

Most subs have high-level inputs.
Yep, that's what I was thinking about, too. Good point.

The Sony unit uses special connectors for the sub (although those connectors can be easily removed per instructions in the owner's manual), but the ends that connect to the sub are like regular speaker wire, so swapping in another amplified sub with speaker-level inputs should work out just fine. If the crossover is done in the main unit, then it would be really simple. The BVD-IS1000 has two sets of wires that run to the sub, and I'm assuming that those could be effectively connected to the left and right speaker-level inputs on another sub.
