Am I dreaming or is it real

As I am beginning to look at DVDs in the high def formats, especially since a present specifically was directed to 3 such discs:D , I see that some are in both HD and Blu-ray. Is this for real, a way for more sales and an end to the bickering, or just limited to a few movie companies?

Nope you're not dreaming, I made the same comment to a friend. I think certain studios are trying to hedge their bets at who is going to win the format war.

Well, in that case, if they all will do this, then it becomes a preference, which gives the most in the area that counts:D

are you saying you have discs that have both formats in that 1 disc? (in effect, a combo disc?)

Same movie available in Bluray or HD-DVD.

oh. thats old news. those film companies just dont want to alienate customers.

it doesnt help us consumers at all with regards to format wars

Well it depends how you look at it. If movie A is only available in Bluray what do you do? And if movie B is only available in HD-DVD, then what? And let's say a film studio releases A and B in both formats, then which hi-def player do you buy? HD-DVD or BLURAY? (if you don't have player and are starting collection now)

If all studios would do this(release their movie catalog in both formats) it would negate the format debacle, but since they won't, you will be left holding the bag when one format wins out (market forces at work). Can you imagine if you start your hi-def collection with the format that loses? Remember: Laserdisc, Beta, Mini-Disc, it can happen very easily. The consumer loses.

if a movie is available in both formats ... you still have to choose which to buy ... and you'll still be stuck with possibly a losing format

now, a combo player on the other hand ...

It will if the rest will do the same, release their films under both formats. Then, the real war is on.

Are you aware of a site that reviews these DVDs which version of the same movie is better?

Hello Mr. Mtry,

Yes, highdefdigest.com, I still haven't bought a hi-def player. I'm waiting to see what develops. After all its a lot of money.

I am holding off the jump to 1080p, Dolby TrueHD, etc. for a long time to come.

Thanks. I will check it out see if it is what I am after.

Mr.? You may drop that, thanks. I wouldn't know how to handle it:p This is rather informal place:D

I was thinking that if companies press both versions of the same film, and it will draw more and more companies to this, it would almost settle it for the least expensive conversion.

Unsettling aint it!:p

Agree, but I don't know if all studios will go for this. This can stop the format war since it would make which player to buy a moot point (being that all movies will be available in both formats.)

Home Theater Forum also reviews movies in HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

Warner Bros. Is the only production company that I know of that is producing films for both HD-DVD and Blu-Ray.

I have been browsing his link and found that New Line and Paramount are also pressing both formats.

PLUS, an add on home page or something about a $3500 component that does both formats right now? Already forgot the name, wasn't that familiar.
Yes, expensive, but if one is doing it, what is next? Unless it is a hoax?

Well, I hope they don't have many of my favorites:D It is getting harder to put it off with a gift of 3 high def DVDs for Christmas, no standard def anymore.

Hey Mtry,

I'm in the same boat except I don't have any hi-def stuff, I'm waiting to see what happens in the next few months, manufacturers pay close attention to the Christmas season (sales) to shape strategy for next cycle (quarter).

Forgot about paramount. New Line is part of Time Warner Corp, owner of AOL, Times, and Warner Bros.
