Hi everyone I’m deciding on upgrading from my marantz sr 5010 to a pioneer vsx 933 the pioneer is rated at 135w/per channel (2 channel driven 20hz-20khz 8 ohms) my marantz is rated at 100w/per channel 20hz-20khz 8ohms the pioneer has the res audio rating (it even matters lol) and the other sound enhancements like pure direct sound retriever etc it also has 4K pass through and hdcp 2.2 so is it an upgrade from my marantz or a big downgrade many thanks guys.

The Pioneer may have some more up to date features but overall it seems like a minor downgrade to me. The Marantz has a slightly stronger power amp section and it also has 7.1 pre outs for external power amp(s).

Thanks for the reply mate I would believe that the marantz does indeed have a stronger and more powerful power amp section and also there advanced hdam (hyper dynamic amplifier module) for clear warm tighter undistorted sound at very high volumes I think I will keep my marantz and save up for a more worthy and better upgrade (ps probably another marantz model the sr8012) as it has a very powerful amplifier module capable of outputting near 100 watts to 7 speakers simultaneously according to the audioholics bench test they did on the receiver many thanks anyway mate

I like Marantz gear but I hate to tell you that HDAMs are not the reasons for me. In fact if I were to acquire another Marantz product I would try my best to get one that doesn't have the HDAMs. They do have their place in their integrated amps though, but the way they squeeze them in the AV7700/8800 AVPs and AVRs are marketing hypes that actually seem to do more harm than good as evidence in multiple bench test results. It is hard to believe so if you don't believe that I fully understand. That warm sound thing is another myth they created and got spread via internet hearsay. There is no truth to it and if you do a bling listening comparison you will not be able to tell one that has the HDAM "warm sound" to one that doesn't have it, such as the NR series. I can list a number of my findings on this topic but I am sure you don't have all day to read, so I am going to spare you with the details.:) Overall the SR5010 is a nice AVR, despite those HDAMs..

I do believe with AVR’s there will sometimes be a con to something good so I do understand your point but I guess it’s what makes them stand out from the there competitors it would make sense that pioneer and marantz have a good and bad side they used to be head on rivals in the 90s.

I'd also stick with the Marantz for now. The rating of 135 wpc for the Pioneer is at 6 ohms one channel driven and only at 1khz and thd of 1%.....the equivalent to the Marantz' spec at 8 ohms is 80 wpc. Either way not a significant difference in power, just 1 dB spl in the end, hardly noticeable. No pre-outs on the 933 as Peng mentioned if amp power is a consideration down the line.

These days I'd look to Denon for better value/pricing than Marantz myself....they're sister brands and more alike than not, altho they market the Marantz like Peng mentioned....and an upgrade to consider would be Audyssey XT32 and the use of the Audyssey Editor App which your Marantz missed out on.

Here's the zkelectronics comparo fwiw https://www.zkelectronics.com/compare/pioneer-vsx-933/north-america/marantz-sr5010/usa/

I think it comes down to which brands you trust more - Marantz/Denon vs Pioneer/Onkyo.

I think the difference in power output is insignificant.
