I went information hunting today to about 6 local av stores - you know the ones.
Anyway, at the last one I made an impulse buy.

I needed a receiver to watch movies and play tunes in our soon to be finished basement. I figure that all I need is a decent receiver to play movies and actually hear all that is going on. I also wanted a receiver that would let me hear all the instruments and their ranges on my CD collection.

I need at least 2 component in 1 out and some s-video.
7.1 would be nice but not necessary.

Here's the question ---
Did I get suckered in on:
A Floor model Onkyo 901 for $600 and 5 yr warranty.
I have a 30 day return.

If I did get suckered, what receiver or HTIB would you recommend
for 5 - 6 Benjamins?

You didn't get suckered, but for $5-600, I think a better choice would be a brand new TX-SR702.

Teah the onkyo is a nice receiver...I recently set one of those up for someone and rather enjoyed the sound and easy setup.

MDS or anyone,
what makes the 702 better.
I'm not too educated on audio.
Thanks

I don't recall all of the features of the 901 but it is a few models back from the current line. I think the main distinguishing feature of that model was that it has NetTune and is the most powerful model of the lineup. Other than more power, it is identical to the TX-SR801.

The 7xxx series has always been the best bang for the buck in Onkyo's lineup, IMO. Being the newest of the model line it has video transcoding from composite and s-video to component, 7.1 and multiple zones, supports all of the current codecs, 24/192 dacs, and the configurability features that they leave out of the 5xx and 6xx series - like the ability to set power on volume, preferred codec per input source, lip-sync adjustment, etc. The only thing it lacks is HDMI and for that you have to get the 802 which is about $200 more.

It is also THX Select certified if you care about that...

I think i will return the 901 - as I said - impulse.
I knew i could return it and probly would. It was a spur of the moment bargain but I have gained and enormous amount of knowledge from audioholics & avs. and you guys. I have only been on here about 2-3 wks.
