ALPS Potentiometers?

Is there something negative about this?

The OdysseyTempest uses one, and someone on another board made a short comment, which implied it was a negative for the Tempest. When I asked why he considered it a bad element of the Tempest, he never responded.

Anyone know anything about ALPS Potentiometers?

I have had Alps pots before and they are one of the better ones available. I can't understand why anyone would be negative about them unless they had an atypical bad experience at one point. If I had to choose a replacement pot Alps would be one of my first choices.

With all I've read about Odyssey gear,I seriously doubt they would put substandard parts in such an otherwise quality designed product.

Alps Potentiometers

If any of you are diy folks there are alternatives you may wish to consider. Most of the standard potentiometers have tracking error problems. Tracking error is basically how close both channels in the pot are matched. Typical tracking error is about 1 db or more. This also has been proven to give audible differences. They also may have more noise due to the material they use. I use a discreet attenuator that uses individual metal film resistors. The tracking error is typically 0.05db worst case, and metal films have pretty low noise. DACT makes these, and they are available for purchase if your not into designing your own.
Have fun.

Hey, maybe if I retrofit my old Dyna preamp with DACT pots I can get another 30 years out of it! ;)

(For you young'uns out there, Dynaco was notorious for using cheap pots and switches on their otherwise good gear)
