Almost Famous & Mothman Prophecies

These are two of my favorite movies. They're both on my goto lit among some others of course. I got to sit down and watch both last night on the new ht. It was a lot of fun.

Almost famous ranks way up there though. I love everything about that movie. Great acting, great story, great character development... it's all there.

Mothman Prophecies to me is just one of those sleeper movies. It's such a well done movie IMO. I'm not a Richard Gere fan at all, so that fact that I like it so much is somewhat of a testement to how good it is. It's got a great creep factor that just subtle and realistic. It really pulls at the unknown and unexplainable, and the fact that you can stretch your mind enough to see it as plausible just makes that much better.

Where are these two movies on your list?

Almost famous is probably a top 10 for me for all the same reasons you listed.

Never seen Mothman Prophecies...not a Gere fan either...now I guess I need to...:)

I like both of those movies. Neither one ranks high on my favorites list, but I do like them (I have seen a lot of movies, so you might say they have some competition!)

I really enjoyed Almost Famous (it should be due out on Blu-ray soon too, there is already a UK release).

I liked Mothman Prophecies, but it isn't anywhere near top of my list either.

I like Mothman just because it was different than most movies in that genre. It was a well thought out story that you get behind I thought. One of the best lines was:

John Klein: I think we can assume that these entities are more advanced than us. Why don't they just come right out and tell us what's on their minds?
Alexander Leek: You're more advanced than a cockroach, have you ever tried explaining yourself to one of them?

It's just kind of profound way to look think about the supernatural I guess.

Granted, it wasn't one of those HOLY CRAP! WHADDA GREAT MOVIE! movies, but a good Thursday nighter for decent entertianment that wasn't didn't require missiles, tanks, or spaceships.

I liked Mothman, it was a very original script. Although it wasn't a Japanese remake it certainly set the stage for the The Ring, The Grudge et al. Not a top 10 in book but certainly worth the time it takes to watch.

Almost Famous...I guess I'm in the minority on this pile of cinematic refuse. This put me to sleep faster than spending an afternoon at granny's watching Donahue. No offense meant to Phil. One word sums up my opinion of this movie, shmaltz. But considering this movie was conceived in the bowels of the king of shmaltz, Crowe, it comes as no surprise. If he churns out another lovesick lead learns a heartwarming lesson 10 minutes before the end of the movie and everything is peachy keen and everyone lives happily ever freakin after movie I'm going to revoke his combo writer/director card myself.

But I'm not bitter.

I liked Mothman. There's a lot that's been written on the Mothman events and while the movie didn't stick to literal facts, it did a good job of catching the feeling of the people that it happened to. A lot of people in that town were somewhat involved and the movie rolled them into a few characters but fortunately, the movie didn't treat them like a bunch of idiots or drunk rednecks. If you liked the movie, check out http://www.mothmanlives.com/. The Mothman events loom large in the world of weird events and are the origin of the Men In Black thing.
