Talking about an upset stomach! Pepto isn't going to cure that one!

It is unknown how many pythons are competing with alligators in the Everglades, but at least 150 have been captured in the past two years,
Holy Cow. What kind of idiot irresponsible pet owner releases something that dangerous into the wild?

Florida Pets

The snake is on today front page.
Here's last year's front page.

WE KNOW HOW TO GROW 'EM HERE IN FLORIDA

And yes, that is a full grown buck in it's jaws. This was found by a news chopper flying over the lake.

Problem? Tastes like ckicken! :D

I can't find the picture now, but there was about a 40' python caught in a wealthy beach-side residential neighborhood of Fort Lauderdale at least 10 years ago. It was living in Birch State Park. It ate all the local dog, cats, racoons and opposums. They took it on the Tonight Show. Had at least twenty guys trying to hold it out straight for Jay Leno.

Being a local here in South Florida, this is not news to me. Or you Dave.
By chance I am a snake lover, also iguanas. My 5' iguana did escape (this was 4 years ago), but they are native here (well native after 50+ years here). For awhile I would find him in the back yard waiting for food. I tried to recapture him, but they are very fast. Anyhow he no longer comes by, but I did see about 6' one last week (no, not mine) in the back yard. Also a 3' so I threw them both some romaine lettuce. Of course they thrive (or rather, enjoy) on their treat of Hibiscus flowers. But Hibiscus does not help for their diet. They are a calcium deficient species. The snakes I had, they either died after 3-4 years and a few I gave to local pet store (actually only 2). I do recall an Albino California Kingsnake that I gave to the store. It was quite mean with me, so I warned them. However the new owner (a lady) actually finally tamed it. And it grew very large. I have also had a Burmese Python, but my favorite was a Red-Tail Boa. I loved him a lot, but he did not live long. Some take better to captivity than others.

I think these animals are getting bigger.

I had a hamster once... but it ate the family dog so we had to put it down.

In Maryland we have a problem called the northern snakehead. This is a fish native to Asia that Orientals make a supposedly delicious soup with and is sold live in Asian markets. Some however got released in ponds and streams and now they are breeding in the Potomac tributaries. What's the big deal ?you say. This fish will eat all the other fish in a pond, then get out and crawl/slither on DRY LAND to the next pond to start all over again. It has no native enemies.

You call that a fish? That's bait!

We've got so many non-native fresh water fish here you can't tell what's what!

Even the plants and animals are getting pushed out of Florida by immigrants!
