All in One Receivers

Hello All,

I'm remodelling the house and decided to wire the ceilings and walls for speakers, as well as look for a decent 6.1 receiver. Space is at a premium though, and i've decided to try and find something with the receiver and dvd player in one box. The receiver I've seen, and like so far is the Sony AVDC700ES.....If anyone has experiences with this receiver or any other recommendations, I'd appreciate it.
Thanks

Not bad. For the 4 inches or so of space you're saving you are going to be sacrificing quite a bit in quality. One of the problems with the all in one stuff is if one part of it dies, and DVD players don't last forever, You'll need to replace the entire unit.

agree with NO MOre SONY(?)

my brother has an all-in-one sony ... the player part of it died prematurely (which makes the entire unit useless)
oh and make no mistake ... sony laser products die notoriously often

there are thin dvd players 50mm thick available with pioneer.
though i dont have any ideas for the receiver

You'd be much better off with the Panasonic XR55 digital receiver (it's got a low profile), and a multi format Panasonic dvd player (they're slim also - S47, S77 or S97). You'll get much better sound and flexibility with that setup as opposed to an all in one. Check online pricing through yahoo or google.

Ya, I've seen some of the digital receivers, and they're pretty small, but I'm concerned with the sound quality out of them vs. a regular analog receiver...I've heard the digital ones are not as good.......maybe I heard wrong..

IMHO
You heard wrong or sound satisfaction is in the ear of the idividual.I made the switch to the Panny XR50(go with the XR55-stereo rears/bi-amping) )about a year ago and all i can say is WOW! I dont think i would ever go back to analoge.

Once you got used to the clairity and uncolored sound i think you would be impressed.Out of the box i was a little freaked......not sure if it is break in or my ears adjusting but after about 100 hrs i loved it.

FYI-just saw the XR70 discounted at Frys(Austin TX) for $199.00

welp. just measured the space i have.....it's about 7" high and 17 inches wide.....now I looked at the panasonic lineup, and the xr70s receiver and the s-29 dvd player would fit best ( i still have to cram a satellite receiver in there).......my only concern now is going to be cooling.....anyone know how much heat these digital receivers put out....just went and saw the Sony receiver, and it sounded great but you could fry an egg on the thing after a few minutes.........that's not gonna work in cramped quarters......thanks for the help

If you are remodelling why not just make the space bigger or put the electronics somewhere else? A seperate component rack would work. 7" is not very much space and I doubt you would get adequate cooling with a receiver, DVD player, and sattelite box crammed in there (if it would even fit).

A standard (class A/B) receiver gets hot because of inefficiencies in the way they work. They are only ~40% efficient and the remaining 60% is dissipated as heat.
Since digital amps are >90% efficient, heat shouldn't be much of a problem.

But I agree with Hi Ho, it's usually best to have extra space for expansion, etc.
So I would get a rack, stand, or bigger space to put the stuff.

All of the "all in one" receiver/dvd players include "digital" receivers so that throws the above argument out the window. For its price, I've heard good things about the little panny XR55.
